Alex Owens will not be a Providence Friar. Owens failed to achieve a qualifying ACT score and will attend Tallahassee Community College this year. Owens had an academic red flag when he wasn’t qualified to play basketball as a freshman in high school but the Providence coaching staff remained optimistic Owens could get the score he needed. Bob Simon was the lead recruiter on Owens prior to leaving Providence for Alabama.

This shuts the door on Owens attending Providence and also officially frees up another scholarship for Ed Cooley. That means Cooley and his staff have 2 open ships to play with should a player become available that they believe can help their roster, whether via transfer or incoming freshman. Owens was the highest rated recruit in the 2015 class for the Friars but he also likely wouldn’t have been able to contribute much on the court until probably Janaury due to a torn ACL he suffered in mid-February 2015.
