Preseason Bracketology All the Rage This Week

After 7 months of “way too early” preseason projections it’s now pretty timely to be making preseason projections — if for no other reason than the preseason ends tonight. This week has seen lots of different publications come out with their preseason bracketology — something that people might argue is still way too early — and there has been a bit of a dichotomy about where Providence stands in regards to the NCAA Tournament following the 2015-16 season. It appears that dichotomy stands between the human based projections and those generated by data and computer programs.

Here is a summary comparing the results of some prominent preseason bracketology:

CBS ESPN Kenpom NBC SI Team Rankings USA Today WaPost
In/Out In In Out In Out Out Out In
Seed 9 11 n/a 12 n/a n/a n/a 12

Joe Lunardi (ESPN) leads the way in terms of having the most Big East teams in his field of 68 with 6 teams from the conference. Jerry Palm (CBS), NBC, SI and USA Today have 5 Big East teams in the field. Kenpom and Team Rankings have 4 Big East teams in their brackets. Some of the teams that have 5 Big East teams in but don’t include the Friars have jumped Marquette up to the 5 spot behind Villanova, Georgetown, Butler and Xavier who are in basically every preseason bracketology. I think the league should easily have 4 schools in the Big Dance this season but whether they can get half the league, or better yet, 60% of the teams in for the second straight season remains to be seen and appears very much up to the eye of the beholder or computer program.
