Big East Tournament Seed Watch 2/26/16

Six of the ten teams in the Big East have four games left. The remaining four teams have three games left. The bottomline is that the regular season comes to a conclusion on March 5th with all ten teams in action and the likelihood is that many of the Big East members will still be jockeying for final seeding position for the Big East Tournament that begins on March 9th at Madison Square Garden. I’ll be doing this “Seed Watch” post regularly over the next eleven days and there will be more detail about tiebreakers and scenarios as the season gets closer to a conclusion. For now, I’ll give you the Big East Tournament bracket as it would be today and what a win for certain teams this week means for the seeding outlook.

The first game of the tournament will be at 7pm on Wednesday, March 9th with another game that night at 9:30pm. All games will be televised on Fox Sports 1, with the finals on March 12th being televised on FOX.

Seed Movement Scenarios by Matchup

In this edition of the “Seed Watch” I’ll be looking at the games this weekend in the Big East. I’ll analyze some scenarios if a win and some if a loss and then do this exercise again on Monday for the games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Let’s start with Saturday.

#8 Georgetown: 14-14 , 7-8 vs. #6 Butler: 18-9, 7-8

Georgetown has been a big disappointment this season and are in danger of dropping below .500 on the season with a loss against Butler on Saturday. This game tips at 12pm ET on CBS.

#1 Villanova: 24-4, 13-2 vs. #7 Marquette: 18-10, 7-8

Villanova will look to rebound after their loss at Xavier on Wednesday. The Wildcats need to beat Marquette to avoid opening the door for Xavier to take the top spot. A Villanova win means they are guaranteed a top 2 spot and they’d remain a 0.5 game ahead of Xavier with their remaining two games at home against DePaul and Georgetown. On Marquette’s side of the aisle, the Golden Eagles are right in the mix for as high as 3rd, but they could also finish as low as 8th. Getting their 8th league win would mean they would come out of the weekend another spot or two up the ladder after passing Georgetown with their win against Creighton on Wednesday. This game will be televised on FOX at 2pm ET.

#5 Providence: 19-9, 7-8 vs. #9 DePaul: 9-18, 3-12

Providence has continued their downward spiral that arguably began with their loss at DePaul on February 2nd. The Friars are 1-4 since they dropped that game to the Blue Demons. DePaul got their 3rd league win on Thursday against St. John’s that will likely keep the Blue Demons out of last place. A Providence win means they could tie Creighton for 4th with a loss by the Bluejays on Sunday. Those two teams will then face off on Wednesday next week in a game that could be for 4th place in the league. A DePaul win guarantees they finish 9th and would mean Providence could drop all the way to 8th. This game tips at 4pm ET on CBS Sports Network.

#2 Xavier: 25-3, 13-3 vs. #3 Seton Hall: 20-7, 10-5

Xavier will be riding high off their win against #1 Villanova on Wednesday night at the Cintas Center. The Musketeers would keep the pressure on for overtaking the top spot in the league standings with a win against Seton Hall. A Seton Hall loss also means the Pirates’ dream of winning out and plucking the 2 spot would be over. Seton Hall winning this game would mean that dream is still alive, but the Pirates would still need a little more help from Xavier in the Musketeers’ final game against Creighton. This game tips at 12:30pm ET on FS1.

#4 Creighton: 17-11, 8-7 vs. #10 St. John’s: 8-21, 1-15

Creighton and Seton Hall are the only other Big East teams that have a chance at 11 league wins. Creighton would need to win out to accomplish it. St. John’s winning would keep their hopes of 9th place alive, but that’s about it. A Red Storm win means Creighton falls into the abyss of teams with 8 league losses and would continue to muddy the waters. The Bluejays can split with Seton Hall, so a tiebreaker would depend on who finish around those teams but Creighton is still alive for 3rd place. This game tips at 2:30pm ET on FS1.
