Providence Continues Pursuit of Highly Ranked Recruits

Ed Cooley is not scared of a little competition. And to be clear, going toe-to-toe with schools like Kansas, Louisville, Maryland, NC State and others of that ilk isn’t the kind of thing that would normally be classified as “little competition”. Cooley has been fearless when taking on larger and more established programs when he and his staff identify a recruit they really want. If you’re a fan of a program not named Duke or Kentucky, then you’re probably used to losing recruiting battles, especially when schools like Duke and Kentucky get involved. Cooley doesn’t care. He’s going to keep his head down and keep building a relationship with the player, the player’s parents, coaches, handlers, siblings, grandparents, dog walker, etc.

Ed Cooley One of Five New Appointees to NABC Board of Directors

Ed Cooley has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Board of Directors for the 2016-17 season, the organization announced on Wednesday. Cooley joins Bill Coen (Northeastern), Frank Martin (South Carolina), Matt Painter (Purdue) and Gary Waters (Cleveland State) as five new appointees for this year. The NABC was founded in 1927 by Forrest “Phog Allen” and the main purpose of the organization is “to further the best interests of the game of basketball as well as the players and coaches who participate in the sport.” The NABC founded such programs as Coaches vs. Cancer, Reese’s College All-Star Game, which LaDontae Henton participated in back in 2015, and is involved in governance of NCAA basketball at all three levels.

“We are very pleased that Bill Coen, Ed Cooley, Frank Martin, Matt Painter and Gary Waters have agreed to join our board of directors,” said NABC Executive Director Jim Haney. “They have all been active with committees and various NABC initiatives while bringing a broad perspective and additional diversity to our board.”

Report: Providence, Ed Cooley Working on Extension

Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal reported on Monday that Ed Cooley and Providence are working on a contract extension. Cooley’s current contract runs through 2021 after a previous extension following the 2012-13 season. Cooley’s original contract signed in March of 2011 was for a term of six years with the extension in 2013 lengthening it for another four. With nothing finalized and Providence’s propensity for not releasing contracts or their details, the length of this latest extension or the surrounding terms are unclear as of this publishing. McNamara’s article quoted Providence’s latest tax filing from 2013-14 that showed Cooley’s total pay that year to be $1.5 million. It should be noted that the total figure likely includes bonuses for winning the Big East Tournament and making an NCAA Tournament appearance in March of 2014. Providence’s fiscal year is July 1-June 30.
