Rapid Reaction: Providence Friars Blow Out Seminoles

This game was over before it started at Mohegan Sun with the Friars getting out to an 11-0 lead in the first 5 minutes. Florida State didn’t score their first field goal until the 13:21 mark.

Kris Dunn was very impressive playing in front of a large number of family and friends from nearby New London. After dishing out a career high 14 assists on Thursday against Navy, Dunn scored a career high 15 points while finishing 1 assist shy of a second straight double-double.

LaDontae Henton led all scorers with 24 points to go along with 10 boards.

Providence will take on Notre Dame Sunday at 2:30pm.

Providence vs. Navy: Lineup Analysis

Fans have been keeping a close eye on the different lineups and substitution patterns that Ed Cooley has been using through the first 3 games of the 2014-15 season. Substitution is not something Friar fans have been used to thinking about for the last few years with Providence finishing 350th, 2nd from last, nationally last season in % of bench minutes at 14.1%, per Kenpom.com. While the season is early and the data is small in terms of sample size, Providence currently ranks 116th in % of bench minutes at 33.3%.

Richard Coren over at Scout Friars has been doing a good job putting together the different lineups and the +/- by player (Binghamton and Navy). I’ve taken a more detailed look at each lineup in chronological order of usage, minutes played during that usage and the scoring numbers while they were on the floor for each half. After a few more games are completed and the data sample grows I’ll do a follow up post analyzing the most and least productive lineups so far.

Friars Handle Bearcats, Eventually

Things were somewhat lackadaisical early again but Providence managed to get out to a 25-8 lead with just under 8 minutes in the first half and everything seemed to be happening as expected at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Five turnovers in less than 4 minutes would allow Binghamton back into the game though as the Bearcats went on a 14-2 run to get the score to 27-22 at the 4:17 mark.

Providence would get the lead back up to 11 following the under 4 minute media timeout but the scrappy Bearcats would claw back again to make the halftime margin only 4 points at 33-29. A 9pm Monday tip, which really started closer to 9:15pm, meant that the Dunk was nearly empty so there wasn’t a lot of crowd energy to give the Friars an assist.

Friars Hold Off Albany in Home Opener After Raising Their 2014 Big East Championship Banner

Ed Cooley was just happy that his Friars got the win against Albany on opening night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Saturday night. “We didn’t have our best team day,” Cooley said after the game. Cooley continued, “I thought today’s win was a culture win. I think our culture won today.  We’ve played in so many close games over the years, particularly with LaDontae [Henton] and Tyler [Harris] we just found a way to win.”
