Xavier’s Trevon Bluiett Doubtful for Tonight’s Game

It looks like Xavier will be without their leading scorer on Wednesday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Chris Mack told FanragSports.com’s Jon Rothstein that Trevon Bluiett is “doubtful” against the Friars tonight. This news comes a few hours after the betting line opened late with Providence showing as a 3-point favorite, which didn’t line up with the analytics sites like Kenpom.com who was predicting a 70-69 Xavier victory. A 4-point difference in the Kenpom number and Vegas is rare and was a clue that Bluiett would at best be limited in this game. Since this news broke the line has climbed to Providence being favored by 5 and even 5.5 points in some places.

Happy Monday, Friar fans! While some of you may be nursing an Alumni & Family Weekend hangover I’ll do my best to give you some news and notes from around the Providence basketball world to get you caught up on the on-court product and recent recruiting tidbits. Obviously Saturday’s win was a big one against 22nd-ranked Butler in front of a sold-out crowd at the Dunk, but the Friars still have a lot of work left to do if they want to keep dancing in March for a fourth straight season.

Cooley: Providence Needs To Stay Positive But Be Desperate

A 1-4 start to Big East play isn’t something Providence fans are used to under Ed Cooley, at least not since the league became the current 10-team configuration before the 2013-14 season. The Friars did start Big East play 1-4 in Cooley’s first two seasons at Providence but since then the Friars have been 3-2 through their first 5 Big East games every other season under Cooley. The fanbase appears to have had a meltdown after the DePaul loss with the outburst being book-ended by the Friars dreadful loss at Boston College on December 23rd to close out non-conference play.

Cooley: Kyron Cartwright, Jalen Lindsey Will Be Game-time Decisions Saturday

Providence head coach Ed Cooley gave an update on his injured Friars during Thursday’s Big East media call. Cooley his players are still “hobbling and getting some treatment.” When asked to provide specific updates on Kyron Cartwright — who played against DePaul on Tuesday night after missing the second half against Creighton last Saturday — and Jalen Lindsey — who did not play against DePaul after injuring his hand at the end of the Creighton game — Cooley termed both players as game-time decisions.

Chin Up, Friar Fans. Big East Play is Looming

Friar fans, you need to fight that feeling. No, not the one REO Speedwagon sings about. I’m talking about that pit in your stomach that’s been there since around 6pm on December 23rd. Despite a rather unceremonious ending to the non-conference part of their schedule, the Providence Friars had a good start to the season. 10-3. That’s better than the 9-4 I predicted and they certainly are further along at this point than I anticipated, losing to the lowly Boston College Eagles notwithstanding. In a year that was supposed to be all about development of young talent to bring them along for future years this has been a fun group to watch and some of those green players appear ready to help right now, notably Kalif Young.
