Friars Need to Stay Focused as Exam “Break” Nears

With just one game standing between the Providence student-athletes and Fall semester final exams the Friars need to keep their eye on the ball through Saturday afternoon. After a 3 game losing streak Providence responded on Wednesday to knock off their in-state rival University of Rhode Island in a game that felt comfortably in control most of the time despite the score being pretty close most of the way.

Friars-Rhody Rivalry: A Young Fan’s Perspective

The most obvious thing to point to as to what makes this annual game a rivalry is the geography. Providence College and the University of Rhode Island are located in the same state. That seems to make sense to me as to why this game is considered a rivalry game. If you read stories like Craig Leighton’s well written article at FriarBasketball.com you get some perspective from a more seasoned fan as to what truly makes this a rivalry game. Perspective is always a good thing in my opinion.

From my perspective as a fan of Providence College basketball only since 2005-06 the “Saga of Sly Williams” as Leighton puts it is not something that is on my radar. I can read about it and maybe it angers me to some extent but because I wasn’t there to experience the vitriol back then I have a hard time using that as a motivating factor today. For me as a 2010 graduate of PC and a 27 year old my motivation for why this is a big game really is just because of the geography. I also happen to be a person that attended PC from out of state so I also lack the perspective of growing up around the rivalry and maybe, like some who did, having friends and even family that attended both schools.

Donate a Coat at the Dunk Tonight!

Anyone attending tonight’s game at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center is reminded that PC cheerleaders will be present at the entrance gates collecting gently worn winter coats. These coats will be distributed on December 20th at the Feed 1,000 Rhode Island Event at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

For more information on Feed 1,000 the website is http://www.feed1000.org/.

Providence College to Honor 1994 Big East Championship Team

Per a release from the athletic department on Friday Providence College will honor the 1994 Big East Championship team during the Friars’ January 10th Big East tilt against the Georgetown Hoyas. That game is set to tip off at 12pm at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Prior to the 2013-14 Providence Friars the 1993-94 team was the only other basketball team in school history to win a Big East Tournament Championship. No word on if any of the members of that team will be present but my guess is there will be some players represented. Some of the key players on that championship squad were Michael Smith, Dickey Simpkins, Eric Williams and Rob Phelps. The head coach was current Texas head coach Rick Barnes.

To purchase ticket packages and individual game tickets please call the Providence College ticket office at (401) 865-GOPC or visit Friars.com.
