Thoughts from the Road: Providence’s Weekend at Mohegan Sun

With back to back games on Saturday and Sunday against ACC teams I was expecting Providence to split the weekend and head back to Rhode Island at 4-1 thankful for a good first 8 days of the 2014-15 season. Ed Cooley’s bunch had no plans of settling for a split. The Friars wanted to make a statement this past weekend and I think they managed to do just that.

Having said that, Florida State is not a very good team right now. They have now lost 3 straight games after falling to UMass in a tight game that preceded Providence/Notre Dame Sunday and dropping a home game against Northeastern before arriving in Connecticut. The Seminoles don’t seem to have an identity on offense and they clearly quit during the second half of their game against Providence. Leonard Hamilton and his staff have a lot of work to do with that team going forward.

Friars Defeat Notre Dame in Nail-biter

What a game! This game had to be one of the best of the early college basketball season and its a shame one team had to lose. What turned into a championship game for the Naismith bracket of the Hall of Fame Tipoff with both teams being undefeated heading into the game the players didn’t disappoint.

The story early in the game was Notre Dame’s second chance points from offensive rebounds but the story quickly changed to be about LaDontae Henton.

“Henton was fabulous,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said after the game. Fabulous might be an understatement. Ed Cooley was emotional in his post game remarks talking about how he was recollecting after the game about LaDontae Henton being his first commitment at Providence College and how he is proud to have watched him grow up.

Henton did his best Bryce Cotton impersonation and went off for a career high 38 points in 40 minutes including the game winning free throws with 14.8 seconds on the clock. The Friars made two stops after that with the Irish getting the ball out of bounds off a Jerian Grant miss. Cooley mentioned after the game that Kris Dunn wanted to guard Grant but Cooley opted to give the assignment to Junior Lomomba because Dunn was a bit gimpy after taking a spill into the first row behind the basket a few minutes earlier.

Providence only had 10 turnovers but they allowed the Irish to grab 10 offensive rebounds. Both teams shot the ball well from the field with Providence being 28/50 (56%) and Notre Dame going 26/52 (50%). Jerian Grant came alive in the second half and ended up with 20 points after getting off to a slow start in the first half.

Providence’s next game is Friday back at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center against Yale.

Notes:

  • Freshman Jalen Lindsey injured his ankle after making a three pointer in the first half. He would only return to the bench after halftime and was on crutches. Cooley didn’t get into details after the game but said they will give the players Monday off and re-evaluate the injury before the next game against Yale on Friday.
  • LaDontae Henton’s 38 points are the most for a Providence player since Bryce Cotton scored 36 points in Providence’s loss to North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament last season.
  • After having a few less than stellar performances at the free throw line earlier in the season Providence shot 92.9% (13/14) against Notre Dame.
  • The Providence team will be together on Thanksgiving at Ed Cooley’s house.

Providence Friars Rout Navy, 88-51

With this game being looked at by many as the final tune-up game for the Providence Friars before they head south on I-95 to take on Florida State and Notre Dame this weekend at Mohegan Sun it was important for Ed Cooley’s group to play a more complete game than they have in their first two games of the season. That seemed to have been accomplished Thursday night against Navy.

The Midshipmen struggled with Providence size and speed all night and LaDontae Henton got off to a fast start leading the Friars with 10 points in the first half on 4/6 shooting including 2/3 from deep.

Navy led 3-0 and then 3-2 early but that would be the only time the Midshipmen would hold leads in this game. Providence went on an 18 to 1 run to open up a 14 point lead at the 12:24 mark of the first half after that first Navy basket. Providence didn’t allow a lack of effort or freshmen mistakes to derail that lead which is something that occurred their last time out against Binghamton. Providence doubled up Navy at the half, 40-20 despite Henton only playing 12 minutes after picking up his 2nd foul at the 7:11 mark.

The freshmen had their best collective night scoring 29 points total with 18 of those coming from big man Ben Bentil. Bentil was active early on the glass and was often the beneficiary of one of Kris Dunn’s career high 14 assists. Ed Cooley told Vin Parise after the game “I thought [Kris Dunn] was spectacular tonight. I think he controlled the whole game: rebounding, passing, shooting the ball. Kris is trying to get in a rhythm. We have a long way to go but I’m glad we made some strides today.”

Dunn played superb on Thursday night and he characterized it as “one of the best games I’ve played in my career.” He went on to credit his teammates for knocking down shots and allowing him to establish a rhythm on offense. Besides just the eye test of Dunn’s play in this game his stat line was certainly impressive. 12 points on 4/7 from the field to go along with those 14 assists, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block and 2 turnovers.

Talk about stuffing the statsheet.

The one potential negative on the night was the foul trouble that Dunn had in both halves and Henton had in the first half but I don’t think much should be made of that especially since Dunn played a number of minutes without picking up his 5th foul. Navy had two players foul out on the night.

One of the big storylines of the early season so far has been Ed Cooley’s substitutions. I thought he did a much better job of allowing guys to play longer together to develop an on-court chemistry and get into a rhythm. Jalen Lindsey was the first man off the Providence bench at the 16:51 mark and he replaced Kyron Cartwright which was a change from prior games where Lindsey would come in initially for Kris Dunn. The rotation and substitution patterns is something to keep an eye on this weekend against some tougher competition.

Navy was led with 10 points by James Hemphill. The Midshipmen shot 39% from the field on 19/49 shooting and were outrebounded by the Friars 36-24 with Providence grabbing 9 offensive rebounds that led to 10 second chance points. Navy also had 17 turnovers which led to 17 Providence points though the Friars only had 7 fast break points on the night.

Here’s a new stat for Providence fans to get used to: bench points. The Friars scored 36 points off their bench tonight against Navy’s 23. Providence scored 32 of their 88 points in the paint and assisted on 24 of their 31 made field goals.

The Friars will move on to their first high major tests this weekend as they finish up this 5 game in 8 day stretch to open the season. The Florida State game tips off at Mohegan Sun Arena Saturday at 2:30pm.

The Ed Cooley Radio Show 10/15/14

The second installment of The Ed Cooley Radio Show was broadcast live from McPhail’s on the campus of Providence College. As usual John Rooke was the host and there was even a special guest appearance by President of the Friar Faithful, James Kirby. Cooley talked about a variety of topics including Rodney Bullock’s knee injury, Ben Bentil’s clearinghouse situation, scheduling strategy and others. You can listen to the show courtesy of FriarTV by clicking this link.

Here is a transcript of most of Cooley’s comments:

Cooley’s opening quote: “We’re excited to open the season against a team that made the NCAA Tournament last year and our players are doing a great job. We’re really young, we’ll get into that later but we’re just incredibly appreciative and very nervous about the upcoming season.”

Inaugural Friartown Fan Voice Podcast to Go Live This Week

Back during the summer I referenced something called the Friartown Fan Voice podcast. I was going to try to do the first one during the summer as a recruiting podcast but I just didn’t have the time. Now that the season is rapidly approaching and we are about 1 month from Providence’s home opener against Albany I figured this would be a good time to put the first one together. I’d prefer not to have me droning on myself for the entirety of this podcast. I want to hear from you. I set up a Google Voice phone number that is essentially a voicemail system for you to call and leave your question or comment or anything relating to Friar basketball. I’ve gotten a few calls so far but would like more voices to be heard. Please include your name and hometown so that I reference you correctly when I play your message or respond to it.

The number to call is (516) 500-PCBB (7222) so give it a shot and have your voice heard.
