Heart & Soul: The Story of the 2013-14 PC Friars

Cox Sports put together an hour long recap of the 2013-14 season for the Providence College Friars. It will air tonight on OSN in Rhode Island but you can watch the entire thing right here. It’s broken up into 5 parts below. It’s a great look back at the ups and downs of the magical run that PC went on last year and is a must watch for all Friar fanatics.

BREAKING: PC President Rev. Brian J. Shanley Offered New Five-Year Term

This is great news for all things Providence College Athletics. Father Shanley has really been a driving force behind increasing PC’s competition on the athletic fields while also helping to expand the applicant pool that would be interested in Providence College. “Fr. Shanley’s vision for Providence College has been outstanding,” said Providence College Board of Trustees Chair John Killian.  “He was the driving force behind our terrific, new Ruane Center for the Humanities as well as AACSB accreditation for our School of Business.  He also had the keen sense to help us navigate through a very turbulent period in college athletics, and was instrumental in both the design and formation of the new BIG EAST CONFERENCE.  I know I speak for the entire Board of Trustees in congratulating him on this new term,” Killian said.

This is no small thing. Shanley is now one of the top President’s when it comes to all things BIG EAST and/or Fox Sports 1 related. He has seen the expansion of the PC campus and the academic and athletic facilities necessary to make PC competitive in the private school marketplace.

“I am both appreciative and humbled by the Corporation’s and the Trustees’ continued faith and confidence,” said Fr. Shanley.  “It is truly a privilege to lead this great institution.  I am grateful to God for the opportunity to do so and for the many blessings He has bestowed on me during my tenure as president.  There is always room for growth and improvement, but I believe Providence College is making clear, strong and aggressive strides in the right direction, and that we are poised for continued success,” Fr. Shanley said.

Among his accomplishments during his tenure as president, Fr. Shanley:

If you check out the top menu on this page you will see a tab called “FriarTV”. Within that tab you will see videos broken down by non conference and Big East games but there is also a page called “Non Game Videos”. This page houses videos ranging from the Cox Sports documentary, “Cooley” to recruiting videos. Yesterday, Providence College Athletics YouTube account uploaded two new videos and the links have been posted on this page. The first video is the intro video played at the Dunk on Senior Night when the basketball team took on Marquette. The second video is the intro video played at Scheider Arena prior to a PC hockey game.

#pcbb On: Providence’s Out of Conference Schedule for 2014-2015

It’s officially the offseason now. March Madness has come and gone. Connecticut is the national champion.

The focus for fans now turns heavily to recruiting, discussing potential starters/lineups for their team next season, how many minutes and points per game and rebounds per game, etc. a kid they have never seen play before will have and, finally, who they will be playing out of conference (OOC). For Providence, recruiting means filling out their remaining 2 spots for the 2014 class with a focus on 5th year transfers and junior college players who can contribute immediately next season. Potential starters/lineups likely can’t be determined for the Friars until they have another guard in hand for 2014 and at some point in the coming weeks, I’ll enter the fray on that discussion with my own thoughts on that topic. For now though, my focus is on the OOC schedule that PC has lined up for next season.

As I mentioned in my piece reviewing the Big East’s first season with the current configuration, one of the big keys for maintaining the strength of this updated version of the Big East is for teams to play a strong OOC schedule. The reality is that most years won’t provide the opportunity to play a top 25 ranked opponent every week like the prior version of this conference did many years. My guess is that most years there will be about 2-3 teams in the top 25 with the potential for a great year having 50% of the league ranked. The 2013-2014 season saw the Big East have an OOC strength of schedule ranked 7th in the country. They likely need to be top 5 every year in that category. Things are off to a solid start with Creighton reportedly having agreed to a home and home series with Oklahoma beginning in Omaha next season. Also, it was reported over the weekend that St. John’s and Duke will restart their series on January 31, 2015 at Madison Square Garden after a two year hiatus. The Johnnies also will head to the Carrier Dome this season to take on former conference rival Syracuse in December 2014.

Rhode Island Senate to Honor Kevin Stacom, Joe Hassett and Tracy Lis

The AP reported yesterday that the Rhode Island Senate “will consider a resolution Tuesday honoring Kevin Stacom, Joe Hassett and Tracy Lis.” The resolution will be sponsored by Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed who is a member of the PC Class of 1981.

Stacom, Hassett and Lis had their jerseys retired on January 25th, 2014. I think this is probably a good time to point you to one of the best pieces I’ve read in a long time in regard to PC basketball. It’s no surprise that it comes from Craig Belhumeur at FriarBasketball.com. It was posted on January 24th, 2014 and you may have read it back then, but I urge you to click the link below because it’s an absolutely fantastic read, especially for the offseason.
