Xavier Fans to Campout Tonight Before PC Game #pcbb

At Xavier they have something called “1831 Week” which, according to the Facebook page “is a new tradition where we the Xavier Community can celebrate our school and its existence. This week is designed to promote school spirit and our school’s virtues. ” As part of this “1831 Week” they are having a campout tonight outside the Cintas Center with give-aways, free food and a DJ until 1am but they are somehow supposed to stay warm/have fun without any alcohol (have a feeling this is a wink, wink type rule). One of the big raffle prizes for those that participate and stay through the night is a trip to NYC for the Big East Tournament (hotel included) for the winner and 3 friends. This is a pretty cool idea. Maybe PC would consider doing something like this on Slavin Lawn at some point.

Dear PC Students: Keep It Up #pcbb

Dear PC Students,

You took a lot of heat over the last week. Most of it pretty deserved. Your attendance at basketball games at the Dunk has been pretty dismal. But something crazy happened on Tuesday night. You showed up. And you stood up. And you were loud. I know the guys couldn’t finish off the comeback but wasn’t that comeback in the 2nd half a lot of fun? Did you feel the electricity the Dunk can have if you are there in force and making your presence known? The rest of the crowd feeds off of you. If you stand up and yell and start chants, the other fans in the building will join you. You saw first hand how loud the Dunk can be when everyone is standing and cheering on our Friars. Opposing players should want to HATE playing in front of you at the Dunk. St. John’s player Jakarr Sampson said “this is a hard place to play. They got really good fans. The crowd was into it. I feel like that really brought them back to life, the crowd.”

Tuesday night was great. But there are 3 home games left on the schedule. Only 3 more opportunities to see this team and great group of seniors, Ted Bancroft, Kadeem Batts, Bryce Cotton and Lee Goldsbrough, play at the Dunk. So my message to you is this: Keep it up.

Go Friars!

Dear Providence College Students, Getcha Heads in the Game #pcbb

With the news breaking on Twitter last night that the game will be blacked out in the dorms, that’s one more excuse to throw by the wayside. We’ll see if they just straight up don’t care if they don’t show tonight.

Dear Providence College Students, Getcha Heads in the Game

The members of the Men’s Basketball Team, who proudly wear the colors of our school, have been exceeding expectations and surging their way toward the top of the Big East. It seems, however, that many of you have failed to notice the accomplishments and efforts of your fellow classmates. Attendance and participation on the part of the student body have been flat-out pathetic.

The Dunkin Donuts Center has always been a venue that has made life uncomfortable for opposing teams, even moving some opponents to tell ESPN Magazine that they hated and dreaded playing at the Dunk. The student section has always been a main contributor to these antics.

Any proud Friar alum will tell you that attending Men’s Basketball games as a student and witnessing big moments, such as wins over Michigan in 1976, UNC in 1978, and Pittsburgh in 2009, were highlights of their time on campus.

It is beyond disappointing that during syllabus week, on a Saturday afternoon, against Xavier, a team the Friars may be fighting for an NCAA Tournament bid, many of you failed to show up. You are depriving yourselves of one of the better experiences you can have at PC. Trust us, when you graduate, you’ll wish you had gone to more of these.

With that, we encourage you to put on your black, white, and silver and show up, stand up, and get loud on February 4th for the next Friar home game vs. St. John’s and at the remaining home games this year. Show your support for Coach Cooley, Bryce, Kadeem, LaDontae, and the rest of the team, who are putting together a very special season.

A major Division I college basketball atmosphere is not the same without the student body.

Sincerely,

Rick Treleaven ‘09, Ryan Holt ‘09, and Fellow Friar Fanatics from PC Class of 2009
