Rodney Bullock to Withdraw from NBA Draft and Return to Providence

Providence junior Rodney Bullock put his name into the NBA Draft to test the waters at the end of March. On Monday, Jon Rothstein reported that Bullock will return to Providence for his senior season. Bullock became the first Providence player who took advantage of the new rule allowing players to declare for the NBA Draft without an agent and then return to school. Ben Bentil declared for the 2016 draft without an agent but eventually opted to sign with one and keep his name in past the deadline to return. Bentil was drafted 51st overall in 2016 by the Boston Celtics.

2016-17 Team Awards Given Out at End of Season Banquet

Providence hosted fans, parents, alumni and friends at their end of season banquet for the 2016-17 men’s basketball team on Saturday night. The event was held at the Omni Hotel and featured a visit from recently available 2017 top-35 recruit Makai Ashton-Langford and his family. This marks the third straight year that Providence has hosted a recruit the weekend of their annual postseason team banquet. Nigel Williams-Goss visited Providence during the end of season banquet in 2015 and Alpha Diallo attended the event last spring.

Here are the team awards:

  • Jimmy Walker Most Valuable Players: Kyron Cartwright and Rodney Bullock
  • John Zannini Coaches Award: Casey Woodring
  • Coca-Cola Most Promising Prospect: Kalif Young and Maliek White
  • Marvin Barnes Defensive Player of the Year: Alpha Diallo
  • Unsung Hero Award: Isaiah Jackson
  • Lenny Wilkens Hustle Award: Emmitt Holt
  • Ryan Gomes Most Improved Player: Jalen Lindsey
  • Thomas Ramos Academic Award: Tom Planek (3.74 GPA)

Providence Sophomore Guard Ricky Council II to Transfer

Providence now has their second offseason departure with the news that sophomore guard Ricky Council II will transfer, he announced on his Instagram page. The North Carolina native spent two seasons at Providence with very limited minutes. In 19 career games at Providence, Council averaged 0.9 points/game and 0.5 rebounds/game in 3.5 minutes/game. Council came to Providence after doing a post-graduate year at Moravian Prep and was billed as a shooter and scorer. His best game at Providence was in November of his freshman year when he scored 5 points in 9 minutes in a blowout win over Brown.

Providence’s Rodney Bullock Testing NBA Draft Waters

Providence junior Rodney Bullock will put his name into the NBA Draft to test the waters, ESPN.com’s Jeff Goodman tweeted. Bullock is taking advantage of the rule change made in January 2016 that allow college players to enter the NBA Draft multiple times and still maintain their eligibility to return to school as long as they don’t hire an agent. Goodman’s tweet indicates Bullock is not going to sign with an agent.

Providence Sophomore Ryan Fazekas to Transfer

The first offseason defection occurred on Wednesday when news broke that Providence sophomore wing Ryan Fazekas would transfer, per Jeff Goodman of ESPN. Fazekas saw his minutes and role diminish greatly in his second season at Providence after starting off hot in his freshman season until that year was derailed by mononucleosis.

Providence’s Kyron Cartwright, Rodney Bullock, Emmitt Holt and Jalen Lindsey will meet with the media from 1:35pm ET through 1:55pm ET. Ed Cooley is scheduled to meet with the media from 1:55pm ET through 2:15pm ET. Following this news conference the Friars will hold an open practice from 2:20pm ET through 3:00pm ET at UD Arena:

The Providence players are at 46:30. Cooley is at 1:06:20.

Awards season in college basketball is just heating up with the regular season less than a week old in the major conferences. The Big East announced their All-League teams on Sunday and some of their individual awards on Monday. The big awards will be announced at 4:30pm ET Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, which is a couple hours before the Big East Tournament tips off.
