For those Friar fans wondering where Drew Edwards has been lately — he sat out Providence’s final non-conference game against Boston College last week — Ed Cooley may have hinted at a potential answer: Edwards might get shut down to redshirt. Providence Sophomore Drew Edwards Out 4-6 Weeks After Knee Surgery

Providence sophomore guard Drew Edwards will be out 4-6 weeks after undergoing knee surgery, according to Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal. Edwards will have the surgery on June 2nd, per a source. Edwards played in 33 games during his rookie season with the Friars and averaged 2.4 points/game and 1.6 rebounds/game. His best game of the season came on December 12th when he poured in a career-best 17 points in a win against Bryant. The play that will stand out the most about Edwards is that he was the in-bounder who dished to Rodney Bullock for the last second layup that beat USC to give Providence their first NCAA Tournament win since 1997.

Edwards is currently back on campus attending summer classes. He will be one of several returning guards vying for increases playing time in 2016-17.

Drew Edwards: Family, Loyalty and a Competitive Spirit

Drew Edwards didn’t average 30 points/game in high school. He didn’t leave the Baltimore area to attend a basketball-factory prep school. He didn’t run on the Nike EYBL, adidas Gauntlet or Under Armour Association circuits. He went to the same all-boys Catholic high school that his father, uncle and brother attended. He played with a non-shoe company affiliated AAU program coached by the same people who coached him in youth leagues growing up. He is loyal. He is competitive. He plays to win.
