Carson Desrosiers has signed a professional basketball contract and will be taking his talents (and hair stylings) to Finland. The 7-footer from New Hampshire will play for Kataja Basket Club in Joensuu, Finland. Kataja plays in the Korisliiga which is the best league in Finland and is comprised of the top 11 teams in the country. The league has been in existence for 75 years Kataja is the defending champion after defeating Bisons Loimaa 3-2 in the best of 5 series. That was the first Korisliiga title in the franchise’s history after being runner up in 2014 and finishing 3rd in 2013. Winning also qualifed them for the 2015-16 Eurocup regular season. Eurocup is one level below Euroleague which is considered the top tier European basketball league in the world.
For the second year in a row a player who was pegged for a starter’s role and major minutes in the upcoming season has left the Providence program. Last year it was Josh Fortune announcing his intention to transfer on the Friday before Memorial Day. This year it was Paschal Chukwu a week before Memorial Day. Fortune started at the shooting guard position and likely was going to continue doing so in what would have been his junior season at Providence before announcing his intention to transfer, having his mom declare it was so that he could be closer to home and then opting to go to Colorado — a school further from his home in Virginia than Providence. Now that Paschal Chukwu has picked a new home and will get his change of scenery I thought it would be interesting to examine the entire situation and some of the comments made by Chukwu’s high school coach.
Kris Dunn is attending the Nike Basketball Academy this weekend, per College Basketball Talk. Dunn joins an impressive cast of current college players and a few elite incoming freshmen.
In what can only be described as a massive blow to Ed Cooley, freshman big man Paschal Chukwu is transferring from Providence, per a tweet from CBSSports.com’s Jon Rothstein. The 7’2 Chukwu just completed his first season at Providence and will have 3 years of eligibilty remaining after sitting out the 2015-16 season, per NCAA transfer rules.
Tyler Harris has chosen the school he will spend his final season of eligibility and it has a familiar head coach. Harris committed to Auburn University and Bruce Pearl on Friday, indicating his commitment by sending out a tweet of #WarEagle, the well-known battle-cry at Auburn. Harris visited the campus during the first weekend in May. He also visited Boston College, UConn, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Nebraska and Oklahoma State during his transfer process. The familiarity with Pearl having coached Tyler’s older brother Tobias had to be a large factor in the decision to attend the SEC school.
Well it was a tense few days for Providence fans between the initial report from Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday and an official announcement from Kris Dunn but the good news Friar fans were hoping for has now become a done deal. Dunn will officially return to Friartown for at least one more season. While it is unlikely that Dunn would remain at Providence beyond the 2015-16 season he does technically have eligibility through the 2016-17 season due to his medical redshirt being granted.
The news that Providence fans have been waiting for since their season ended in Columbus, OH on March 20th has broken. Kris Dunn will return to Providence for his junior season instead of entering the 2015 NBA Draft, according to a report by Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowki. The 21-year old Dunn has two years of eligibility remaining due to a medical redshirt granted for the 2013-14 season when Dunn played in just 4 games. Dunn was being projected as high as 13 by DraftExpress.com and 10th by Sam Vecenie of CBSSports.com. A formal announcement is expected soon, per Wojnarowski. A good place for that formal announcement may be the team’s end of season banquet on Saturday at the Omni Hotel in Providence.
