Kris Dunn Named to 2016 USA Basketball Men’s Select Team

Kris Dunn was one of 25 players announced on Tuesday that will be members of the 2016 USA Basketball Select Team. The Select Team trains with and against the USA Basketball National Team as the National Team prepares for the Rio Olympics in August. Dunn is joined by fellow college players Malcolm Brogdon (Virginia), Brandon Ingram (Duke), Brice Johnson (North Carolina) and Denzel Valentine (Michigan State). The other 20 players are already in the NBA.

Providence Player Evaluations: Rodney Bullock is Returning Leading Scorer

At the suggestion of Twitter follower Chip Scutari, I’ll be profiling each returning Friar player, as well as, the new faces in Friartown for the 2016-17 season. Providence currently has 11 scholarship players rostered for next season.

Rodney Bullock

  • RS Junior
  • 6’8 225 lbs
  • 2015-16 Stats: 35 games played, 32.8 minutes/game, 11.4 points/game, 6.8 rebounds/game, 1.3 blocks/game, 3FG 34/101 (33.7%), Win Shares 3.1
2015-16 Season Recap

In his third year on Providence’s campus, Rodney Bullock finally got to play his first year of basketball for the Friars. Bullock missed the 2013-14 season due to suspension and the 2014-15 season due to a torn ACL suffered in October of 2014. Bullock certainly got off to a fast start with 20 points and 6 rebounds on 8/14 shooting in the season opener against Harvard. Bullock scored in double-figures in his first four games and averaged 18.8 points/game in that 4-game stretch. Then Bullock had four straight games where he failed to reach double figures. Next four games? Back to double figures. After that he was much more up and down on a game-by-game basis.

Bullock’s first season on the floor for Providence was positive, overall. However, he had some of the inconsistent play you would expect from a rookie. He scored in double figures in half of Providence’s 18-game Big East slate but also scored 8 or less point in 8 Big East contests. Bullock’s biggest highlight will be his backdoor layup from a Drew Edwards in-bounds pass to beat USC late in Providence’s first round NCAA Tournament game, but the larger picture is that he showed flashes of real scoring ability, while lacking consistency.

What He Needs to Work on in the Offseason

The best way to sum up what I believe Bullock needs to work on is the phrase “killer instinct”. Bullock seemed to have his best games when he was involved early on and playing with a confidence and swagger. In games where he didn’t score or perform well, he often appeared physically overmatched at the 4 spot and never seemed to be able to get going. Bullock will be relied on heavily next season as the team’s leading returning scorer so, he will need to find that confidence and swagger more consistently.

Outlook for Next Season

Bullock will be looked to as a team leader next season despite only having one full season of college basketball under his belt. With Ben Bentil staying in the NBA Draft, Bullock will become a larger part of Ed Cooley’s offense. Bullock will hope to do his best Bentil impersonation as the scoring load will fall squarely on his shoulders, at least early in the 2016-17 season.

Providence Sophomore Drew Edwards Out 4-6 Weeks After Knee Surgery

Providence sophomore guard Drew Edwards will be out 4-6 weeks after undergoing knee surgery, according to Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal. Edwards will have the surgery on June 2nd, per a source. Edwards played in 33 games during his rookie season with the Friars and averaged 2.4 points/game and 1.6 rebounds/game. His best game of the season came on December 12th when he poured in a career-best 17 points in a win against Bryant. The play that will stand out the most about Edwards is that he was the in-bounder who dished to Rodney Bullock for the last second layup that beat USC to give Providence their first NCAA Tournament win since 1997.

Edwards is currently back on campus attending summer classes. He will be one of several returning guards vying for increases playing time in 2016-17.

Ben Bentil Will Remain in 2016 NBA Draft

Providence will lose two players to the NBA Draft with sophomore Ben Bentil confirming on Sunday that he’s foregoing his remaining eligibility and will join teammate Kris Dunn as draft eligible underclassmen. It isn’t clear if Bentil has officially signed with an agent, but he presumably will soon now that he’s definitely leaving school. Bentil is being projected as a late first or early second round draft pick after a strong sophomore season in which he improved his scoring by nearly 15 points/game to lead the Big East at 21.1 points/game.

How Kris Dunn & Ben Bentil Measured Up at the NBA Draft Combine

The NBA’s 2016 Draft Combine began on Wednesday in Chicago with players being interviewed by teams and having their official measurements taken. Both Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil were among the 70+ players invited to this year’s combine. Dunn’s measurements aren’t likely to be much of a surprise as he was measured last summer while attending the Nike Skills Academy. Bentil, on the other hand, is a relative unknown from a measurables perspective, having never been officially measured at any camp or event like Dunn. Bentil was listed on Providence’s roster at 6’8 during his freshman campaign and grew an inch to 6’9 on the school’s listing this past season. Those may be official from a roster perspective, but they are not normally very scientific. Results of Wednesday’s measurements have hit the interweb and Bentil’s are likely to be viewed as mixed for the 21 year old from Ghana. Dunn’s measurements aren’t surprising but they are still impressive for a point guard, something I’ll get into later in the article.

Providence Sophomore Tyree Chambers Transferring

Providence announced Friday that sophomore Tyree Chambers is leaving school.  Chambers, like freshman big man Quadree Smith who opted to transfer earlier this week, was a late addition to a Providence recruiting class. Chambers came to Friartown from Germany and was largely viewed as insurance for Kris Dunn who was coming off a second shoulder surgery. Chambers played in 14 games in two season at Providence.
