Providence has landed their second recruit for next season with the commitment of junior college forward Emmitt Holt of Indian Hills JC. Holt’s commitment was first reported by Eric Bossi of Rivals.com. Holt, at Indian Hills JC by way of Indiana, adds some much needed size for Ed Cooley’s frontline next season. Holt visited Providence’s campus last weekend, along with Wake Forest graduate transfer Andre Washington.

This past weekend marked the kickoff for all three shoe-sponsored leagues and Providence had coaches at all of three of those events, while also monitoring some events that aren’t run by the sneaker companies. I was between the Nike EYBL session in Brooklyn and the Under Armour Association in lower Manhattan. Joining me going between these events all weekend was Associate Head Coach Andre LaFleur. Brian Blaney was in Dallas for the adidas Gauntlet series’ opening event, while Jeff Battle was spotted in Staten Island at the Elevate Hoops event. Ed Cooley wasn’t on the road this weekend as he was back on campus hosting a pair of transfer targets. More on that later.

This weekend kicks off the real recruiting season for members of the class of 2017 and beyond because starting on April 15th a live evaluation period officially begins. A live evaluation period means college coaches are allowed to attend and evaluate recruits at certified events. This particular evaluation period lasts through April 17th with another full weekend of live evaluating on the schedule beginning on April 22nd. Nike and Under Armour will kick off their grassroots leagues in NYC, while adidas gets started in Dallas this weekend. There are also some other events going on this weekend that Providence recruits will be playing in.
As I traditionally do each spring and summer, I’ll be providing a guide for fans to follow along and see where Providence’s targets are playing during a given live evaluation period. Providence continues to recruit for next season and will be hosting a duo of big men on campus this weekend. Jon Rothstein reported that Wake Forest graduate transfer Andre Washington and junior college forward Emmitt Holt will visit the Providence campus over the weekend. Last week, 2016 big man Kalif Young‘s coach reported that the Canadian would take an official visit to Providence this weekend. Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal tweeted out on Wednesday that Young isn’t expected to campus until May. The Friars also got a visit from 2016 wing guard Alpha Diallo last weekend as well as Michigan State transfer Marvin Clark. Clark would have to sit out next season but then would have two years of eligibility remaining. Akil Douglas, another junior college forward, visited Providence on March 29th.

Kevin McNamara sent a tweet earlier this week in which he said Providence was “trying to line up others” to visit campus this weekend in addition to Brewster Academy wing Alpha Diallo. It appears one of the “others” Ed Cooley and his staff were working on getting to campus was Michigan State transfer Marvin Clark, Jr. Adam Zagoria reported that Clark will visit Providence beginning Thursday with the visit concluding on Saturday. The team’s banquet will be held on Saturday night.

Earlier in the week I wrote about Providence’s Spring recruiting heating up. With the calendar now turned to April, Ed Cooley and his staff will be pushing to get recruits to campus. One such 2016 recruit got a visit from Cooley on Wednesday and by Friday, Alpha Diallo decided to set a visit to Friartown. Jason Smith, Diallo’s coach at Brewster, announced on Friday that an official visit date has been set for Diallo to visit Providence. The Harlem, NY native will be on Providence’s campus April 8th and 9th, according to Smith’s tweet.

Providence’s season ended back on March 19th and Ed Cooley and his staff quickly turned the page to the future and recruiting for 2016 and beyond. The Friar staff has been tracking some players in the class of 2016 for some time now, but recruiting appears to be heating up in Friartown. Sacred Heart transfer Cane Broome took an unofficial visit to Providence on Monday and Kevin Farrahar at Friarbasketball.com reported that junior college big man Akil Douglas will be on Providence’s campus Tuesday for a visit. Fresh of a coaching change at Pittsburgh, 2016 big man Corey Manigault is back on the market and a new name in the Juco ranks also surfaced over the weekend in Kavell Bigby-Williams.
