It’s Day 7,302 of the search for a big man in Providence — at least it feels like its been going on that long. The first game of the basketball season is 10 days away for the Friars but the recruiting season is what is still dominating the discussion among Friar fans. Sedee Keita committed to South Carolina on Tuesday and a day later Nik Popovic pledged to Boston College after returning from a visit to Chestnut Hill over the weekend. There continue to be new names popping up in this recruiting effort and the new guy this week is Iran Bennett.

Providence Recruiting Update: Big Man Search Going South
When I last posted a recruiting update 7 days ago it was on the heels of Providence hosting their annual Late Night Madness festivities. The Friars had top big man target Sedee Keita in town for his official visit that weekend and made their big push to get the Delaware native to commit before leaving campus. That big push didn’t yield a commitment and soon after Keita left Friartown a bevy of new names emerged with Providence interest or offers. The spigot of new names is still open. Adam Finkelstein reported on Tuesday that Keita has transferred back down to 22ft Academy — the South Carolina school he attended last year prior to coming back to New England at Putnam Science Academy.

Providence Recruiting Update: Sedee Keita and New Offers, Interest
Providence held their Late Night Madness event over the weekend and there was an impressive turnout of recruits in attendance. Among them were a pair of 2016 big men in Sedee Keita and Isaiah Whaley. Keita is a known target that the Friar coaching staff has been chasing hard for awhile now. Whaley is a name many Friar fans may not have heard. Jeff Battle began expressing interest in Whaley back in June but the Friars didn’t offer until this weekend. The Friars offered another big man on Monday in Serbian Nik Popovic and they are reported to have interest in Sudanese big man Gorjok Gak. More on all and more below.

Providence Recruiting Update: Late Night Madness is Here
Brisk mid-October temperatures are heading for the Northeast this weekend but the temperature inside Alumni Hall on Providence College’s campus figures to be red-hot. Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Napolillo and Ed Cooley have managed to keep the bar high for Providence’s Late Night Madness festivities that will kick off at 8pm on Saturday with the introduction of the men’s and women’s basketball teams by broadcasting legend Bill Raftery. Doors open at 6pm for those students with season tickets and all other students can enter at 6:45pm. The event is open only to Providence College students. Ludacris will perform around 9pm. Cox Hub will have free live streaming of Late Night Madness from 8pm-9pm.

Kevin Marfo Chooses George Washington
Kevin Marfo cut his list down to a final three before announcing his decision: Boston College, George Washington and Providence. He made his announcement on Twitter Friday and Marfo chose the George Washington Colonials of the Atlantic 10. Sources had told pcbb1917.com earlier in the week that Providence was no longer in consideration for the New Jersey native’s services.
2017 Javon Taylor No Longer Committed to Providence
2017 guard Javon Taylor is now officially uncommitted, according to his father Maurice Taylor. The elder Taylor tweeted the news on Thursday. The commitment of Taylor after Providence’s 2014 Elite Camp came as a shock to many people because of how early the pledge was made. For comparison the Friars also got a commitment around that time from another player in Alex Owens. Owens was in the class of 2015. Taylor’s family does have a relationship with Cooley as the Friar head coach recruited Javon’s older brother Jacquil.

Who Is The Next Providence Recruit to Blow Up On The National Stage?
Kris Dunn. Abdul-Malik Abu. Donovan Mitchell. Wenyen Gabriel. What do these players all have in common? They were recruited by Providence head coach Ed Cooley before they blew up on the national recruiting scene. Dunn was being recruited by Cooley while the current Friar head coach was at Fairfield. He went from being a recruit on that level to a McDonald’s All-American. Gabriel is probably the closest to Dunn in terms of meteoric rise. Cooley and his staff have shown an uncanny ability to be able to identify these players before they start their upward trajectory as recruits. Who’s the next recruit that Providence is in early on that will blow up nationally? My guess is Aaron Wheeler in the class of 2017.
