Recruiting News: ESPN Released Post-Summer Top 60 for the Class of 2017

ESPN has now updated their Top 60 for the class of 2017 for the first time since expanding the list from a Top 25. There are a number of Providence targets littered throughout this Top 60 list and many of them play their high school and prep ball in New England. It will be interesting to see what players in the class of 2017 Providence becomes involved with because of new assistant coach Jeff Battle.

Recruiting News: Scout.com Released Post-Summer Class Of 2016 Top 100 Recruit Rankings

The same day that ESPN released their update class of 2016 Top 100 list after the summer grassroots season Scout.com also came out with their updated rankings. Wenyen Gabriel was a major mover in the Scout.com rankings and is the only player to be a new 5-star recruit since the last update. He also catapulted in the top 10 in Scout’s ranking after not even being ranked last time Scout released a Top 100 for this class. Gabriel’s rise has been meteoric.

Scout.com showed more love for Gabriel but not quite as much for other Providence recruits. Bruce Brown and Shamorie Ponds were much more highly thought of in ESPN’s version of rankings while Sedee Keita was ranked 80th overall in ESPN’s and not even close to the top 100 in Scout.com’s. Keita is listed as a 2-star recruit in Scout.com’s database. Having seen him play I don’t see how that’s possible.

Recruiting News: ESPN Released Post-Summer Top 100 for Class of 2016

With the grassroots season coming to a conclusion at the end of July ESPN has released their updated class of 2016 recruit rankings and there are a number of Providence recruiting targets that are in this latest version of ESPN’s Top 100. It’s no surprise who one of the biggest risers in the rankings is with Wenyen Gabriel jumping 60 spots from 83 to 23. ESPN’s Reggie Rankin also spotlighted Friar recruit JJ Matthews a couple of weeks ago as a player that raised his stock enough to possibly break into the Top 100 after the spring and summer. He apparently was on the cusp but not in the Top 100. Matthews is scheduled to visit Providence on October 3rd, along with River City Reign teammate Maliek White. The Big East also has gotten a solid haul already from the ESPN Top 100 in 2016.

Here are some details from ESPN’s latest Class of 2016 Top 100:

2016 Point Guard Maliek White to Visit Providence

With Quentin Jackson cutting Providence from his list on Wednesday it didn’t take long for some good news to be reported in the search for a point guard in the class of 2016. Adam Finkelstein reported on Twitter that Maliek White will visit Providence on October 2nd. White is the grassroots teammate of another Providence target visiting that same weekend in power forward JJ Matthews. The program that both White and Matthews play for is the Richmond, VA-based River City Reign.

Providence Recruiting Update: Friars Out for Jackson, Will Visit Marfo

August in recruiting means players are cutting and narrowing their lists and schools are trying to  make their pitches to get those players onto their campuses for official visits. The Friars have been in that rhythm over these last few weeks, both making and missing list cuts. The next step is to get players that included Providence on their lists to campus. So far there are two recruits that have scheduled visits to Friartown — a guard in Shamorie Ponds and a power forward in JJ Matthews. Ponds is also visiting St. John’s and Minnesota after already visiting Creighton. Matthews is visiting Towson and Murray State before his trip to Providence in early October.

Another 2016 recruit has cut his list down to a more manageable number, according to Adam Finkelstein. 2016 power forward Kevin Marfo has a list of 10 schools he is considering though he told pcbb1917.com that he is yet to set any visit dates.
