All 3 Providence Commits in 2015 Class Nominated to 2015 McDonald’s All American Game

Nominations were announced for the 2015 McDonald’s All American game that will be played in Chicago at the United Center on April 1, 2015. While over 450 boys across the country were nominated there will only be 24 players selected to play in the actual game. That selection will take place on ESPNU on January 28th at 6pm ET.

Drew Edwards, Ryan Fazekas and Alex Owens were all nominated which means Providence’s entire 2015 class got a nomination. It’s unlikely that any of the three will make the final roster of 24 but it’s still a nice accomplishment. One other note is that Edwards’ twin sister Danielle was also nominated. Danielle Edwards is ranked 69th nationally in the class of 2015 by ESPN and she is signed to play at Clemson this fall.

Providence Expected to Watch 2016 Guard Trent Forrest

Russ Wood of Rivals.com reported on Twitter Tuesday that Providence would join Florida at Chipley High School Tuesday night to watch 2016 guard Trent Forrest. Chipley is scheduled to take on Baker in a District 3 battle at 6:30pm.

This recruiting trip comes on the heels of associate head coach Bob Simon traveling to Hickory, NC to watch 2015 guard Ricky Council and his Moravian Prep team practice. Simon offered Council Monday night.

Providence Becomes 2015 Ricky Council’s First High Major Offer

Providence coaches began watching Ricky Council play basketball starting with the early summer of 2014 when they were in need of guard depth following the transfer of Josh Fortune just before Memorial Day. Council was a member of the class of 2014 back then and was little known nationally as he had opted to remain at his local public school and play for an AAU team in Brand X that wasn’t sponsored by any of the big shoe companies. The Friar staff opted not pull the trigger on an offer to Council back then.

That changed on Monday night.

Providence to Watch 2015 Guard Ricky Council

Rick Lewis from Phenom Hoop Report reported on Twitter Sunday night that Providence would travel to Moravian Prep Monday night to watch 2015 Ricky Council. Sources indicated associate head coach Bob Simon will be the coach to take in Council during Moravian’s practice.

This is likely a familiar name to Providence fans as Council was a name in the summer of 2014 as a potential late guard addition to the 2014-15 roster. Council, a native of Durham, NC, never got an official scholarship offer from Ed Cooley though. Council, who had offers from mid-majors like UNC-Wilmington and Appalachian State, following his senior season, opted to do a postgrad year at Moravian Prep. Since arriving at Moravian Council has been putting up gaudy offensive numbers, including a 53 point game at the Pioneer-Swanny’s Classic on Halloween.

2015 Guard Kobie Eubanks Cuts List to 10

I have previously written about Kobie Eubanks back in late November after Providence coaches took in his impressive 37 point performance at the National Prep Showcase in New Haven on the Friday before the Friars played in the Hall of Fame Tipoff at Mohegan Sun. Eubanks is doing a postgrad year at Elev8 Sports Institute in Florida following his failure to qualify at Baylor as a member of the class of 2014.

On Monday he informed Scout.com that he cut his list of schools down to 10 and Providence made the cut for the 121st ranked player according to 247sports’ composite national rankings. Scout.com is the service that ranks him the highest at 53rd nationally.

Vermont Academy Duo Reportedly a Package Deal, Friars Have Offered Both

HoopDreamsMag.com released an article on Tuesday in which the Vermont Academy duo of Bruce Brown and Tyrique Jones, both of the class of 2016, said they are a package deal and plan on attending the same college. “Me and Bruce talked about it and we plan to attend school together,” said Jones. Brown confirmed by saying “yes me and Tyrique would like to attend school together.” Providence offered Jones recently after watching him play at the Hoop Mountain Prep Classic.

Providence Expresses Interest in 2015 Point Guard

Providence assistant coach Brian Blaney was in attendance at Western New England University for day 2 of the BasketBull Hoop Fest watching Providence target Wenyen Gabriel and his Wilbraham & Monson squad take on IMG Academy. IMG Academy won the game, 79-74, behind 33 points from 2015 point guard Tobias Howard. Howard’s performance impressed Blaney enough that the Friar assistant told the Georgia native he would be in touch.

Howard told me he currently has offers from Gardner Webb, Kennesaw St, Miami (OH), Northeastern and UT-Martin. So far he has visited Miami (OH) and plans to take an unofficial visit to Murray State on December 30th. The 6’0 lead guard runs with Stackhouse Elite on the grassroots circuit which is a team founded and coached by former NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse.
