After giving an update on Drew Edwards of Calvert Hall and Ryan Fazekas of Marquette Catholic next up is an update on the final member of Providence’s committed class of 2015, Alex Owens. Owens plays for coach Alex Jackson at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, FL making him the recruit who will have to travel the furthest to attend Providence college in this class at over 1,200 miles. Fazekas isn’t too far off with over 900 miles between Michigan City, IN and Providence, RI though. He also plays for Each 1 Teach 1 on the Nike EYBL circuit.
Last season Oak Ridge went 19-10 and lost to eventual State Champion, Winter Park, in the Region 8A-2 semifinals. The Pioneers are off to a 10-2 start to this season and coach Jackson called Owens “a key contributor” to the team’s early season success.
Coming off a championship season Ryan Fazekas returned to Marquette Catholic for his senior season after Brewster Academy coach Jason Smith reached out to try and scoop up the 6’8 wing forward from Michigan City, IN a few games into his junior season.
Marquette Catholic head coach Donovan Garletts is happy he did as the Blazers went on to win the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Finals in their first ever appearance. Fazekas scored 34 points in the overtime win including 7/11 from beyond the arc which broke a Class A State Finals record of 6 made 3-pointers. The State Championship rings will be given out before Friday’s home opener against Hanover Central.
Drew Edwards‘ Calvert Hall team entered his senior season coming off a 29-7 record the prior year. They have played 8 games so far through action on December 14th and are 6-2 on the season.
Edwards is averaging 18 points/game including games a 34 point performance in his team’s last game against Gonzaga (MD) on Sunday in the 3rd place game of the Gonzaga DC Classic. Edwards shot 12/19 from the field including 4/8 from beyond the arc in the 1 point victory. He scored 21 of his 34 points in the second half.
Edwards was named to the All-Tournament Team and averaged 17.3 points/game in the tournament.
After a tough Friday night loss at Boston College the Providence coaching staff got out on the recruiting trail. Fortunately they didn’t have to travel too far to see some elite recruits as the Hoop Mountain Prep Classic was being held at nearby St. Andrew’s in Barrington, RI Friday through Sunday last weekend.
Ed Cooley, joined by assistant coach Brian Blaney, were front and center for Vermont Academy’s Sunday game against Commonwealth Academy. While Commonwealth Academy has a number of young, talented players on their roster including some that even attended Providence’s Elite Camp in August, the coaching staff offered 2016 Vermont Academy big man Tyrique Jones after the game.

Providence extended an offer to Jonathan Isaac who is a versatile wing/stretch 4 playing for the International School of Broward in Florida.
Isaac blew up in the Spring AAU season this year following a broken forearm that caused him to miss half of his high school season. The 6’9 wing player had his breakout event at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in early May 2014 with Scout.com’s Evan Daniels saying the following:

Hamidou Diallo is a recent transfer to Putnam Science Academy after playing last season in NYC. Diallo reclassified from 2016 to 2017 after making the transfer this summer. Back in late June I told you about Diallo being a new name for Friar fans to watch. He runs with the NYC Jayhawks on the grassroots circuit and recently attended the National Prep Showcase in New Haven, CT.
He made his presence felt there with Rivals.com basketball recruiting analyst Eric Bossi saying the “sophomore shooting guard Hamidou Diallo announced his presence as a high-major prospect notching 21 points and seven rebounds” on the Friday night of the tournament.
