2016 Gavitt Games Quick Look: Providence at Ohio State

Year 1 of the Gavitt Games saw the Big East and the Big Ten split the 8 games, 4-4. Villanova, Providence, St. John’s and Xavier beat their Big Ten foes, while DePaul, Georgetown, Creighton and Marquette dropped their games. Providence’s game against Illinois in the inaugural Gavitt Games was their most-watched non-conference game on Fox Sports 1 last season and came in 6th overall of their 18 games that aired that network in the 2015-16 campaign. Year 2 matchups have been leaked thanks to tweets from CBSSports.com’s Jon Rothstein. You can see all the matchups here. For now, I’m going to take a quick look at Providence’s matchup at Ohio State.

Providence at Villanova Game Status Update: GAME POSTPONED

UPDATE: 5:48pm on January 21st:

The game has officially been postponed to Sunday at 12:30pm. A tweet was sent out by the Fox Sports PR Twitter account confirming the rumor I heard earlier.

UPDATE: 5:15pm on January 21st:

Here’s where we stand as of 2:30pm on January 21st:

Right now there is no update on the status of the game beyond latest from both athletic departments earlier Thursday morning with each saying the game is going to be play as scheduled. Providence has cancelled their planned pre-game brunch. Since that time, the Pennsylvania Governor has declared a state of emergency ahead of the impending storm. It should be noted that Providence is traveling to Philadelphia Thursday and the referees for the game are scheduled to travel into town on Friday. Those are good signs for this game being played, even if the snow means fan turnout will be low.

Stay tuned to this post and my twitter account for updates as new information becomes available.

Providence to Scrimmage Northeastern Behind Closed Doors

Providence will play Harvard in November this season and it will be the 3rd straight November that has happened. The difference this year is that fans, media and TV cameras are allowed to attend the game since it’s part of the official schedule. Harvard had been a “secret scrimmage” opponent for Cooley’s Friars the prior two seasons and that means the game can’t be publicized, score can’t be kept and media and fans are not allowed to attend. Northeastern takes over Harvard’s role this year and the Huskies will travel to Mullaney Gymnasium on November 7th for this closed door scrimmage, per ESPN’s Jeff Goodman. Goodman released his list of all these scrimmages on Thursday. Continue reading Providence to Scrimmage Northeastern Behind Closed Doors

2015-16 Big East Season to Open on December 30th and 31st; TV Marathon Moved to January 2nd

The first two years of the newly configured Big East opened the league season with a marathon tip off on New Year’s Eve. That will change a bit in year 3 as the college football playoff has monopolized New Year’s Eve and the Big East and Fox Sports 1 smartly don’t want to try to compete. While some teams will in fact open their Big East schedules on December 31st, the Fox Sports 1 marathon of games won’t take place until January 2nd. That means some teams will have a very tight turnaround between league games 1 and 2, including the Friars. There are also some games being played on December 30th.
