Providence finished the regular season in 4th place and finished the last 10 games of the season 5-5. St. John’s finished the regular season in 5th place and finished 8-2 in their last 10 games of the season. Providence and St. John’s were then scheduled to meet in the Quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament. If this sounds familiar, its because that’s what happened last season.

On Tuesday the US Basketball Writers Association announced their All-District teams and District Players of the Year. Providence’s duo of LaDontae Henton and Kris Dunn were recognized. Dunn was named the the All-District 1 Team along with Henton. Henton was named the District 1 Player of th Year. District 1 comprises Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Providence and St. John’s will meet for the 3rd time this season with the Red Storm sweeping the regular season series against the Friars. This is the second straight season these two teams will meet in the 4/5 game of the Big East Quarterfinals.
This game opened with the Friars as a 1.5 point underdog. The line was quickly bet up to 2.5

Ken Pomeroy does a log5 analysis prior to each conference’s tournament. For those unfamiliar with what log5 is, here’s a quick and dirty explanation. log5 is a formula that was created by famed baseball writer and statistician Bill James. James’ formula uses team A’s winning percentage and team B’s winning percentage to come up with the probability that team A wins. Kenpom’s version uses his Pythagorean Rating in place of winning perentage. I’ll give you the precise formula and an example at the end of the article for those truly interested in that stuff.
