Joe Lunardi considers the following Big East teams to have a 90% or better chance of making it to the NCAA Tournament:

  • Villanova
  • Georgetown
  • Butler
  • Providence
  • St. John’s
  • Xavier

That means it appears the Big East will get 60% of it’s teams into the field of 68. The only conference to have a higher percentage of their team’s in Lunardi’s bracket on March 9th is the Big 12 who has 70% of their league in the field.

Here is a breakdown of where the 6 Big East teams fall on the seed lines Lunardi’s latest bracket:

National Polls Update: Week 18

Providence’s 1-1 week, including a home defeat on Saturday at the hands of Butler, has dropped them out of the AP poll top 25. The Friars held the 24th spot after being 25th the week prior. They are now 27th in the AP poll. Providence was 23rd in the USA Today Coaches poll a week ago and have fallen out of that poll this week. The Friars are just on the outside looking in at the 26th spot.

Thoughts from the Road: Butler Ruins Senior Day

Thoughts from the road as I traveled down 95 South Sunday afternoon…

  • I felt pretty confident heading into Saturday’s season finale against Butler that Providence could not lose on Senior Day. I put that confidence in writing both here and on Scout Friars. The last thing I expected to happen on a day when emotions would be running high and the team would be amped up was for Providence to have a slow start. Welp.

Kris Dunn Named NBCSports.com All-American

After being a unanimous selection for First Team All-Big East and being named the co-defensive player of the year in the league Kris Dunn got some recognition from the national media on Monday. NBCSports.com’s Rob Dauster has named Dunn as a Second Team All-American. Joining Dunn on the second team was Delon Wright (Utah), Buddy Hield (Oklahoma), Rico Gathers (Baylor) and Rakeem Christmas (Syracuse).

A player that went head to head with Dunn and the Friars in November made Dauster’s First Team All-American in Jerian Grant. Here are Dauster’s full All-American teams:

Kris Dunn and Sir’Dominic Pointer Named Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year

The Big East announced their All-Big East teams on Sunday and on Monday the league announced winners of some individual awards. Kris Dunn and Sir’Dominic Pointer will share the title of Defensive Player of the Year after a vote by the coaches ended in a tie.

Dunn was the frontrunner for most of the year for this award as he leads the league in steals but Pointer really came on strong as the season progressed to the point that many media members, including this one, believe Pointer being left off the league’s First Team is a big time snub.

Other awards were announced by the league on Monday. Pointer was named the league’s Most Improved Player which he likely won in a landslide. Villanova’s Josh Hart was given the Sixth Man Award and Butler’s Alex Barlow was given the Sportsmanship Award.
