Providence went 2-1 since the last release of the national polls on December 8th but that loss was to Brown at home. After the loss to Boston College on December 5th the Friars were only receiving 4 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 0 votes in the AP Poll so it’s no real surprise that the Brown loss would be enough to stop all votes for Providence. The Friars only have 1 game this week which is on Saturday at home against UMass. A win there likely wouldn’t do much for their vote-getting appeal so I expect the Friars to be outside the national spotlight as they head to the Barclays Center on December 22nd to take on the 18th (AP)/19th (USA Today Coaches Poll) ranked Miami Hurricanes.
Bracketology Update 12/15/14
Last Monday ESPN’s Joe Lunardi came out with his 1st edition of “Bracket Math”. This Monday CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm came out with his 1st edition of his Bracketology since doing a pre-season bracketology.
Palm’s bracket has 6 Big East teams in the field of 68 with seeds ranging from 2-12. While Lunardi’s bracket through games on December 7th had 7 Big East teams in the field, Palm has had the chance to remove Providence following their loss at home to Brown. He has also pumped up St. John’s and Seton Hall.
The 6 Big East teams are:

Friars Take Care of Business Against Stony Brook
Providence was having a lot of trouble early against Stony Brook on the defensive glass. The Seawolves seemed to be getting second and even third chances by rebounding their misses against Providence’s zone defense. Ed Cooley was clearly frustrated and went to freshmen Paschal Chukwu and Ben Bentil early on to try to add length and toughness inside. Chukwu continued to play well and has shown improvement each time he has been given an opportunity to play more minutes. Bentil rush a few shots early at the rim but settled in and finished some nice passes from both Kris Dunn and Kyron Cartwright before nailing an open 3-pointer in the second half.

Friars Need to Stay Focused as Exam “Break” Nears
With just one game standing between the Providence student-athletes and Fall semester final exams the Friars need to keep their eye on the ball through Saturday afternoon. After a 3 game losing streak Providence responded on Wednesday to knock off their in-state rival University of Rhode Island in a game that felt comfortably in control most of the time despite the score being pretty close most of the way.
