Providence to Scrimmage Harvard

Kevin McNamara of The Providence Journal reported on Twitter that the Friars will scrimmage Harvard for the third straight season in lieu of a second exhibition game.

These scrimmages between Division 1 teams are closed to the public and the media, per NCAA rule. Here is that rule:

17.5.3.1 Exceptions.

The following basketball contests (games or scrimmages) are permitted prior to the first contest dates specified under Bylaw 17.5.3:

(a) Practice Scrimmages. Informal practice scrimmages with outside competition, provided they are conducted in privacy without publicity or official scoring. Individuals other than athletics department staff members and those necessary to conduct a basketball practice scrimmage against outside competition may not be present during such a scrimmage. The institution shall ensure that the scrimmage is free from public view; and (Revised: 10/27/98 effective 8/1/99, 5/12/05)

While the scrimmage’s statistics aren’t allowed to be kept except for private use, many statistics end up leaking out about these games. Last season there were reports that Kris Dunn looked great against Harvard – a borderline top 25 team at the time – and made fans even more devastated when he injured his shoulder later against Rhode Island College in the team’s exhibition contest.

2015 Point Guard Announces Commitment

Happy Birthday to Justin Robinson. Unfortunately for Friar fans it will be Buzz Williams and not Ed Cooley that gets Robinson’s talents for the next four years. This recruitment was played very close to the vest with Robinson and his family not giving much in terms of quotes other than the generic positive stuff about each of his final 4 schools.

At the end of the day Robinson decided to stay at home and play for the home state Hokies. While this miss hurts for Cooley and the Providence coaching staff, they have a solid class already for 2015 with Ryan Fazekas, Alex Owens and Drew Edwards already in the fold. It remains to be seen whether Cooley will go after another 2015 recruit or pocket the scholarship for a transfer or the loaded 2016 class.

Breaking Down Justin Robinson’s Choices

With the announcement/birthday weekend upon us I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the schools 2015 PG recruit Justin Robinson is considering for his final 4. When I began writing this article I planned on doing all four schools on the list but it has become increasingly clear that this will come down to a two horse race between Providence and Virginia Tech. Maryland apparently has pulled out of the race this week and is focusing on JUCO transfer Jaylen Brantley in 2015 while UNLV always seemed like the outsider of the final group.

Let’s jump right in….
