Providence Adds Guard for 2014

Rumors had been boiling the last couple days that Ed Cooley was trying to add another player to his roster for the 2014-15 season. Specifically the rumor was he was trying to supplement his backcourt offensively by adding a foreign guard to the mix. That rumor became fact today when it was learned that German guard Tyree Chambers would be joining the Friar family.

Chambers had previously been mentioned in the late spring as a potential add for next season by Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal. This move gives Ed Cooley more backcourt insurance in case Kris Dunn needs more time to return from his second shoulder surgery and freshman Kyron Cartwright isn’t ready for big minutes early in his career.

I’ll have more on the Chambers commitment early next week.

Providence Announces 2014-15 Non-Conference Schedule

The school released the non-conference schedule for the upcoming season today and it just served to confirm what we already knew. Some of the blanks in terms of television and times have been filled in. You can see the full schedule by clicking here or at the top of the page.

Some of the notable dates include games at Mohegan Sun on November 22nd and 23rd against Notre Dame and Florida State as part of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off, the Friars’ trip to Rupp Arena to take on Kentucky on November 30th (2pm on ESPN2), and a return trip to the Barclays Center to take on the Miami Hurricanes.

2015 Guard Drew Edwards Commits to Providence

2015 guard Drew Edwards has committed to Providence, per Edgar Walker. This kind of caught me by surprise as I heard earlier in the week that Edwards was in the process of scheduling visits in September. Having said that, my gut was that Edwards and another DMV guard, Justin Robinson, were the top two guard targets left on Ed Cooley’s big board. Edwards was also considering Clemson, Dayton, Kansas State, Providence, Richmond and USC.

Drew Edwards is a talented scorer who stayed loyal to his AAU team Maryland 3D. Instead of jumping to a Nike, Adidas or Under Armour team, Edwards stuck with the unaffiliated program and the coaches he had been coaches by since the 4th grade. Edwards will play the shooting guard spot in college but has the ability to handle the ball if necessary as he ran point guard during his AAU season. He will likely not come into Providence and play 30+ minutes per game next season but once he gets his feet wet he will be a nice weapon for Ed Cooley and the Friars.

Recruiting News: Rivals Updates Class of 2015 Top 150

Rivals released their updated class of 2015 top 150 rankings today. The number of recruits PC is still involved with is dwindling from this top 150 list. Having said that, guys like Justin Robinson and Drew Edwards are extremely underrated to not be in the top 150 for Rivals. Shawntrez Davis said in early August that he wanted to visit Providence but Alex Owens committed since then so I’m not sure if the Friars are still recruiting Davis.
