Kris Dunn Named Top Player in College Basketball by NBC Sports

The national attention and praise for Kris Dunn keeps rolling in as College Basketball Talk at NBCSports.com named Dunn the top player in college basketball for the 2015-16 season. This is the second major national publication to declare Dunn the top player this year as CBS Sports did the same earlier this month. In addition to these accolades Dunn has also been named to Preseason All-American teams by Blue Ribbon College Yearbook, Sporting News and CBSSports.com. Blue Ribbon and CBSSports.com were First Team proclamations while Sporting News placed Dunn on their Second Team. You can find all of Dunn’s honors on his microsite created by Providence’s athletic department.

Providence Recruiting Update: Big Man Search Going South

When I last posted a recruiting update 7 days ago it was on the heels of Providence hosting their annual Late Night Madness festivities. The Friars had top big man target Sedee Keita in town for his official visit that weekend  and made their big push to get the Delaware native to commit before leaving campus. That big push didn’t yield a commitment and soon after Keita left Friartown a bevy of new names emerged with Providence interest or offers. The spigot of new names is still open. Adam Finkelstein reported on Tuesday that Keita has transferred back down to 22ft Academy — the South Carolina school he attended last year prior to coming back to New England at Putnam Science Academy.

Kenpom’s 2015-16 Preseason Rankings Released

Ken Pomeroy — or Kenpom as he and his website are more commonly known — came out with his preseason rankings for the 2015-16 season on Sunday night. While these rankings aren’t meant to be 100% accurate they do give a decent guideline and perspective on how teams compare within each conference and how the conferences compare to each other. Before I get into the rankings, here is an excerpt from Pomeroy’s blog post October of 2013 after he released the 2013-14 preseason rankings:

Providence Adds Former HS Coach Ivan Thomas to Coaching Staff, Former Big East Commish Mike Tranghese to be Senior Advisor for Basketball

Providence announced on Monday that they are making some additions to their basketball program staffs. The one that was rumored to be in the works for some time now is Ed Cooley bringing Ivan Thomas into the fold as the Associate Director of Player Development and Video Operations. Thomas moves into Kevin Kurbec’s role as Kurbec slides up into the Coordinator of Basketball Operations role previously held by Mike Jackson. Kurbec served a similar role under Tim Welsh from 2005-08. Jackson is no longer with the Providence program. It has long been believed that Jackson wants to get more into the athletic department side of college basketball and is working towards that.

The part of the announcement that came as a bit of a surprise is that Providence is bringing former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese back into the fold at Providence as a Senior Advisor for Basketball. Tranghese is currently part of the College Football Playoff committee, though he is expected to step down from that post after the current college football season ends. Tranghese “will assist Athletics Director Bob Driscoll with a variety of items involving the College’s basketball programs,” according to the release sent out by Providence’s athletic department.
