Report: Vermont Academy’s Bruce Brown Considering Reclassifying to 2015

Scout.com’s Evan Daniels tweeted Thursday night that a source informed him of the possibility of 2016 Vermont Academy guard Bruce Brown reclassifying back to the class of 2015 and enrolling in college this fall. ESPN’s Adam Finkelstein followed that up by tweeting that “whispers of Bruce Brown going to ’15 started in early Dec[ember]. Biggest question is whether or not he can complete academic work in time.”

Friars Offer 2016 Vermont Academy Forward at Hoop Mountain Prep Classic

After a tough Friday night loss at Boston College the Providence coaching staff got out on the recruiting trail. Fortunately they didn’t have to travel too far to see some elite recruits as the Hoop Mountain Prep Classic was being held at nearby St. Andrew’s in Barrington, RI Friday through Sunday last weekend.

Ed Cooley, joined by assistant coach Brian Blaney, were front and center for Vermont Academy’s Sunday game against Commonwealth Academy. While Commonwealth Academy has a number of young, talented players on their roster including some that even attended Providence’s Elite Camp in August, the coaching staff offered 2016 Vermont Academy big man Tyrique Jones after the game.

Bryce Cotton Signs with NBDL’s Austin Spurs

The NBA dream will continue for Bryce Cotton as Tuesday he signed with the Austin Spurs (formerly the Austin Toros until October 15, 2014) of the National Basketball Development League. The Toros are a direct affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs who waived Cotton on October 23rd. As I wrote in the article on October 23rd, having the $50,000 in the bank from the partially guaranteed deal he signed with the San Antonio Spurs following the NBA Draft will help to supplement what will be a very low salary this season in the NBDL.

With the injury at the backup point guard position of Patty Mills who will be sidelined until possibly February, Cotton may have a chance at a 10 day call up now and then with the “maintenance” program that head coach Greg Popovich deploys for his veteran players. Any call ups to the NBA also mean a salary bump for the period of time he is on the official NBA roster. Another positive for Cotton is that the Austin Spurs run the same exact offense as the San Antonio Spurs so he will be able to receive plenty of reps and playing time in the system he would be called upon to run with the NBA team. His coach in Austin will be North Providence native Ken McDonald As Adam Finkelstein pointed out in his article for Cox Hub earlier this week, timing may also have played a role in this decision as many of the top European leagues start weeks before the NBA so any player opting to attend an NBA training camp limits his potential earnings that year abroad.
