Friartown Fan Voice Podcast – Episode 6 – Recapping the Carelton Game with Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times

The third episode of the Friartown Fan Voice podcast is now live for the 2016-17 season! This episode is a recap of Providence’s exhibition game against the Carleton Ravens that was played on Saturday, October 29th at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. I was joined by Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times. Unlike me, Brendan was at the Dunk for the game which was not televised.

This episode is structured with a breakdown of each player’s efforts from Saturday night, a broad view of the game from the offensive and defensive sides and we finished by reacting to Ed Cooley’s postgame comments. Go ahead and give it a listen:

Rivals Releases Final Class of 2016 Rankings; Two Friar Commits in Top 150

Rivals.com has released their final rankings for the Class of 2016 and Providence has two committed players that cracked their Top 150. Recent commit Alpha Diallo finished ranked 112th nationally, while Providence’s first pledge in the class, Maliek White, came in at 117th. Both are considered 4-star recruits by Rivals. The last time Providence had a class of commits that included at least two players ranked inside Rivals.com’s Top 150 was the 2014 class that included Ben Bentil, Paschal Chukwu and Jalen Lindsey, who were all ranked in Rivals’ Top 150.

Providence isn’t done yet in 2016 and are scheduled to host Canadian big man Kalif Young this weekend. Young visited Marquette last week and plans to make a decision following his visit to Friartown.

2016 Kalif Young to Visit Providence May 14th

Providence may be officially out of scholarships at the moment, but that hasn’t stopped Ed Cooley and his staff from chasing players. Last week the Friars got a commitment from 2016 Alpha Diallo and that put Providence at 13 scholarships — the maximum allowed — for next season. However, Ben Bentil’s future remains up in the air as he tests the NBA waters and transfers are rampant in college basketball. One of the best available big men left in the class of 2016 is Canadian Kalif Young and Young’s father told Adam Zagoria of Zagsblog.com that Kalif plans to visit Providence for the weekend of May 14th and then make decision soon after that.

2016 Alpha Diallo Pledges to Providence

Ed Cooley had been on the hunt for talent to add to his roster for 2016-17 and beyond. On Tuesday, Cooley got a commitment from a top 100 wing player in Alpha Diallo. Diallo, a native of NYC, attended NEPSAC powerhouse Brewster Academy for his final year of high school. The news was first reported by Evan Daniels on Twitter. He will be the first Brewster Academy alumnus to commit to Providence directly from Brewster since Weyinmi Efejuku, another NYC native, donned a Friar uniform from 2005-2009. Former Friar Kyle Wright attended Brewster, but came to Providence via Monroe College. Diallo’s commitment also gives Cooley his first recruit ranked in ESPN’s Top 100 since he brought Paschal Chukwu and Jalen Lindsey to Providence in the recruiting class of 2014. Cooley has had at least one player ranked in ESPN’s Top 100 in every recruiting class at Providence except the first one in 2011 and the last one in 2015.

Pair of Frontcourt Transfer Recruits to Visit Providence This Weekend

Providence continues to recruit for next season and will be hosting a duo of big men on campus this weekend. Jon Rothstein reported that Wake Forest graduate transfer Andre Washington and junior college forward Emmitt Holt will visit the Providence campus over the weekend. Last week, 2016 big man Kalif Young‘s coach reported that the Canadian would take an official visit to Providence this weekend. Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal tweeted out on Wednesday that Young isn’t expected to campus until May. The Friars also got a visit from 2016 wing guard Alpha Diallo last weekend as well as Michigan State transfer Marvin Clark. Clark would have to sit out next season but then would have two years of eligibility remaining. Akil Douglas, another junior college forward, visited Providence on March 29th.
