Providence Recruiting Update: New 2019 Offer and New 2018 Interest by Friar Staff

Providence’s first public appearance at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center for the 2016-17 season is about a week away when the Friars will play an exhibition game against Canadian school Carleton University on October 29th. The season being right around the corner doesn’t mean that the Providence coaching staff has taken their foot off the pedal on the recruiting trail, though. Providence extended an offer to a 2019 big man this week and has recently expressed interest in some new names in the class of 2018. Let’s learn more about these new Providence targets.

Top 2018 Recruit in Rhode Island Among Providence Late Night Madness Attendees

Late Night Madness festivities have become much less about the official beginning of the college basketball season, which is how the tradition began in 1971 at Maryland. These gaudy events are now much more heavily geared towards impressing recruits and the Friars will do their best to make a splash with the top 2018 target in the state of Rhode Island on Saturday night. Cole Swider, the 6’8 sharp-shooter from Portsmouth, will be in attendance and is currently ranked as the #1 recruit in Rhode Island by ESPN. Swider has a 247Sports Composite National Ranking of 70th in the class of 2018. The Friars offered the St. Andrew’s wing back in June, though they’ve been tracking him for much longer. Swider has also been familiar with the in-state Friars much longer than just a few months ago. He attended Providence’s Elite Camp the last two years and was in attendance for Bill Raftery and Ludacris at the 2015 Late Night Madness on Providence’s campus. This year, Providence is bringing in Shaquille O’Neal a.k.a. DJ Diesel to perform around 9pm and Providence Hall of Famer Doris Burke of ESPN will be the emcee for the evening. Doors to Mullaney Gym open at 6:45pm Saturday night.

Providence Recruiting Update: Introducing the Class of 2019

It’s September 27th and Providence has two commitments for the Class of 2017 to fill the two scholarships that were available for next year’s roster at the present. While the coaching staff hasn’t totally stopped keeping tabs on 2017 targets, much of the recruiting attention has already shifted to both the Class of 2018 and Class of 2019. As of today, pcbb1917.com now has a “Class of 2019” page. There are only 8 recruits there right now compared to over 30 on the page for the Class of 2018, so let’s take this opportunity to meet some of the players the Providence coaching staff has already identified — and offered in many cases — from the class of current high school sophomores.

Providence Continues Pursuit of Highly Ranked Recruits

Ed Cooley is not scared of a little competition. And to be clear, going toe-to-toe with schools like Kansas, Louisville, Maryland, NC State and others of that ilk isn’t the kind of thing that would normally be classified as “little competition”. Cooley has been fearless when taking on larger and more established programs when he and his staff identify a recruit they really want. If you’re a fan of a program not named Duke or Kentucky, then you’re probably used to losing recruiting battles, especially when schools like Duke and Kentucky get involved. Cooley doesn’t care. He’s going to keep his head down and keep building a relationship with the player, the player’s parents, coaches, handlers, siblings, grandparents, dog walker, etc.

Providence Recruiting Update: Rivals Updated Their Class of 2017 Top 150

Nearly three weeks after ESPN and Scout updated their rankings for the Class of 2017, Rivals has now done the same, bringing all three of the major recruiting services up to date, post-summer grassroots season. Rivals released the updated rankings on Tuesday. Unlike ESPN and Scout, Rivals ranks a Top 150 instead of just a Top 100. Providence’s lone commitment in the class didn’t make either Top 100, but Dajour Dickens is in Rivals’ Top 150. The Big East has a total of 6 commits inside the Top 100 as compared to 4 on ESPN’s and 5 on Scout’s Top 100’s. There are also 3 players committed to Big East schools in the 101-150 range of Rivals’ rankings.

Here’s where Providence’s commit and recruits fit on both lists, along with some notable Big East commits and former Providence targets:
