Providence Gets Visit From Top-10 Recruit in 2018

Perhaps Friar fans thought the most meaningful on-campus visitor to Friartown in October would be Shaquille O’Neal at this year’s Late Night Madness on October 14th. Those fans would be mistaken. Just a week removed from DJ Diesel spinning beats to entertain Providence students and recruits alike, the Friars got a visit from a top-10 recruit in the class of 2018 when 6’8 wing Khavon Moore tripped up from Georgia to see the Providence campus on Saturday.

Providence Recruiting Update: New 2019 Offer and New 2018 Interest by Friar Staff

Providence’s first public appearance at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center for the 2016-17 season is about a week away when the Friars will play an exhibition game against Canadian school Carleton University on October 29th. The season being right around the corner doesn’t mean that the Providence coaching staff has taken their foot off the pedal on the recruiting trail, though. Providence extended an offer to a 2019 big man this week and has recently expressed interest in some new names in the class of 2018. Let’s learn more about these new Providence targets.

Top 2018 Recruit in Rhode Island Among Providence Late Night Madness Attendees

Late Night Madness festivities have become much less about the official beginning of the college basketball season, which is how the tradition began in 1971 at Maryland. These gaudy events are now much more heavily geared towards impressing recruits and the Friars will do their best to make a splash with the top 2018 target in the state of Rhode Island on Saturday night. Cole Swider, the 6’8 sharp-shooter from Portsmouth, will be in attendance and is currently ranked as the #1 recruit in Rhode Island by ESPN. Swider has a 247Sports Composite National Ranking of 70th in the class of 2018. The Friars offered the St. Andrew’s wing back in June, though they’ve been tracking him for much longer. Swider has also been familiar with the in-state Friars much longer than just a few months ago. He attended Providence’s Elite Camp the last two years and was in attendance for Bill Raftery and Ludacris at the 2015 Late Night Madness on Providence’s campus. This year, Providence is bringing in Shaquille O’Neal a.k.a. DJ Diesel to perform around 9pm and Providence Hall of Famer Doris Burke of ESPN will be the emcee for the evening. Doors to Mullaney Gym open at 6:45pm Saturday night.

Providence Sending Four Players to 2016 Big East Media Day

The Big East will hold their annual Media Day on Tuesday, October 11th  at Madison Square Garden. All ten member schools send their head coach and usually a few players to NYC each year to hear Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman give her “State of the Big East” speech and meet with the media ahead of the upcoming season. Providence will have four players in attendance this year, the league announced today via the Big East Men’s Basketball Twitter account. Juniors Rodney Bullock and Kyron Cartwright  will be joined by sophomores Ryan Fazekas and Isaiah Jackson as Providence’s player representatives.
