Providence Recruiting Update: Rivals Updated Their Class of 2017 Top 150

Nearly three weeks after ESPN and Scout updated their rankings for the Class of 2017, Rivals has now done the same, bringing all three of the major recruiting services up to date, post-summer grassroots season. Rivals released the updated rankings on Tuesday. Unlike ESPN and Scout, Rivals ranks a Top 150 instead of just a Top 100. Providence’s lone commitment in the class didn’t make either Top 100, but Dajour Dickens is in Rivals’ Top 150. The Big East has a total of 6 commits inside the Top 100 as compared to 4 on ESPN’s and 5 on Scout’s Top 100’s. There are also 3 players committed to Big East schools in the 101-150 range of Rivals’ rankings.

Here’s where Providence’s commit and recruits fit on both lists, along with some notable Big East commits and former Providence targets:

Labor Day Weekend Providence Basketball Update

The Labor Day Weekend is a time for people to hit the beach or lake or [insert other fun summer activity here] one last time before saying goodbye to summer and hello to the school year. The students are back on campus in Friartown after a weekend that is meant to be relaxing and slow-paced, but there was plenty of Providence hoops news that broke over the last few days before the start of classes.

2017 PF Victor Enoh Cuts List, Sets Visit to Providence

List cutting season continues with the July live periods over and done with and players looking to simplify their recruitments as the high school year rapidly approaches. Another 2017 big man has included Providence among his cut-down list and this time it’s Victor Enoh. Enoh’s final list is comprised of Arkansas, Oregon State, Providence and Vanderbilt. In the article linked in the prior sentence, Davenport reports that Enoh plans to visit Providence the weekend of September 10th, which is the same weekend Providence is scheduled to host Nate Watson. I subsequently confirmed with Enoh’s high school coach, Larry Thompson, that the visit is actually scheduled for September 16th-18th.

Makai Ashton-Langford Moves Up Visit to Providence

Multiple sources have informed pcbb1917.com that 2017 point guard Makai Ashton-Langford has moved up his visit to Providence — originally scheduled for September 17th — to Wednesday, August 31st. He is expected on campus as early as 1pm. This comes on the heels of Ashton-Langford moving up his visit to UConn from September 10th to September 3rd. The September 3rd visit was originally supposed to be taken to Louisville but the Cardinals got a pledge from another point guard in the class of 2017 and were removed from consideration by the Worcester native.

UPDATE 1:43pm, 8/31: I was told today’s visit is not an official visit for Ashton-Langford.

Source: Former Providence Grad Assistant Nikola Knezevic Will Be Associate Director of Player Development

A source told pcbb1917.com that Providence head coach Ed Cooley has hired Nikola Knezevic — pronounced NEE-koh-lah kuh-NEH-zhuh-vich to fill the open Associate Director of Player Development position vacated when Cooley promoted Ivan Thomas to assistant coach in April. The source indicated that the hiring was slowed because Providence had to work out visa issues for the native of Belgrade, Serbia. Knezevic played 4 years at California from 2006-2010 and then was a graduate assistant at Providence from 2013-2015 after a 2 year professional career in Serbia. Knezevic played in 105 games at Cal and the Bears made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament in his junior and senior seasons. Knezevic was primarily a backup point guard for Cal and specialized on the defensive end of the floor.
