Providence to Host Annual Elite Camp June 26th

Providence will host their annual Elite Camp on Sunday and there are sure to be some talented players from the New England area in attendance. Mass Rivals is expected to have a big contingent. I attended Providence’s Elite Camp last summer and, as I wrote after last year, I found the value of the camp to be more about relationship development between the Providence coaching staff and potential recruits than player evaluation.

Kris Dunn: College Basketball Star, College Graduate onto the NBA

Just about 14 months ago to the day, Kris Dunn made a bold decision to return to Providence College for another season with the Friars. Dunn, finally healthy after two shoulder surgeries forced him to miss a total of 44 games his first two seasons, was coming off a breakout season that culminated in Providence’s second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, something the program hadn’t done since Rick Barnes took his first two Providence teams to the Big Dance in 1989 and 1990. Dunn was also named the Big East’s co-Player of the Year and co-Defensive Player of the Year, a First Team All-Big East performer, Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, NBCSports.com Second Team All-American and CBSSports.com Third Team All-American. In short, Dunn had accomplished a ton and no one would have blamed him for taking his talents to the NBA. But Dunn wasn’t quite finished at Providence, both on the court and in the classroom.

Providence Recruiting Update: Class of 2018 Phones Ringing

June 15th at 12:00am marked the first time that coaches could directly contact members of the class of 2018 — rising high school juniors. Ed Cooley and his staff worked the phones all day and reached out to a number of targets. Aside from the fact that the NCAA doesn’t seem to mind teenagers having their phones begin to blow up at midnight on a weeknight, Brian Snow of Scout.com had an interesting perspective on the importance of these June 15th calls:

Providence Recruiting Update: Friar Recruits at the 2016 NBPA Top 100 Camp

Providence recruiting has picked up the last few months and the Friar staff had the best Spring recruiting period in Ed Cooley’s time in Friartown. Coaches Battle, Blaney, Cooley and Thomas have turned their attention to the classes of 2017 and 2018 with about 3 weeks to go until the first of the critical July live periods. Another interesting deadline that will be here in just over 12 hours is midnight on June 15th. The clock turning to 12:00 means coaches can begin to contact recruits in the Class of 2018 directly via phone. This is traditionally thought to be a telling time as coaches give hints as to who they are prioritizing in that class. I’ll have a report on who Providence calls later in the week. For now, there is another annual event in June that is drawing some Providence targets to Charlottesville, VA: NBPA Top 100 Camp.

Providence Athletics Hosting NBA Draft Watch Party

Providence Athletics will host an NBA Draft Watch Party on June 23rd at G Pub in downtown Providence, the department announced on it’s Twitter page. Providence has two players eligible for the 2016 NBA Draft and both appear to be locks to get drafted with Kris Dunn expected to be off the board sometime in the top 6 picks and Ben Bentil listed as a late First Round or early Second Round pick in most mock drafts.

Scout updated their Class of 2017 Top 100 a day after ESPN did the same thing. There are some names that are in similar ranges between the two services, while others appear on Scout’s that don’t appear on ESPN’s, and vice versa. 2017 commit Dajour Dickens makes his debut in Scout’s Top 100, coming in at 98. He was just outside ESPN’s Top 100.
