Friartown Fan Voice Podcast – NCAA Tournament 2017 First Four Preview Edition

The Friartown Fan Voice podcast returns to preview Providence’s NCAA Tournament First Four matchup with USC in Dayton. I was again joined by Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times. Zach Helfand of the Los Angeles Times joined to give us some insight on USC’s team and season and then we discussed the coaching job Ed Cooley did this season to get the 2016-17 team from 9th in the preseason Big East coaches poll to a fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

WATCH: Providence News Conference in Dayton

Providence’s Kyron Cartwright, Rodney Bullock, Emmitt Holt and Jalen Lindsey will meet with the media from 1:35pm ET through 1:55pm ET. Ed Cooley is scheduled to meet with the media from 1:55pm ET through 2:15pm ET. Following this news conference the Friars will hold an open practice from 2:20pm ET through 3:00pm ET at UD Arena:

The Providence players are at 46:30. Cooley is at 1:06:20.

Providence Makes School-Record Fourth Straight NCAA Tournament

Providence losing to Creighton in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night broke a streak of three straight trips to the semifinals. One streak that will continue is their NCAA Tournament appearance streak. Providence will be an 11 seed in the East region in a rematch of last year’s First Round game with USC. The Friars and Trojans will face off in Dayton as part of the First Four. The game tips at 9:10pM ET on Wednesday.

Deep Breaths, Friartown: Better Season Than Expected Edition, Perspective

I did a post like this after the news of Paschal Chukwu’s transfer broke back in May of 2015. That edition of “Deep Breaths, Friartown” was more about trying to make lemonade out of lemons while trying to shake of the seemingly illogical move by Chukwu to leave a starting role with a lottery pick point guard in Kris Dunn. Time — and plenty of on-court success since the big man went north to Syracuse — has moved Chukwu’s out of nowhere decision off most Providence fans’ radars. The current hot button topic that is the motivation for this post is the no-show performance by Providence in their Big East Tournament quarterfinal game on Thursday night. While it was painful to watch and I’m sure Friar fans turned off the TV or walked out of Madison Square Garden with a bad taste in their mouths, it’s important to keep things in perspective. And that’s ultimately why I’m writing this. Perspective.
