Providence Recruiting Update: Time to Turn Attention to 2016

With NC State forward transfer Kyle Washington committing to Mick Cronin and the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday its time for the Friar staff to turn their attention to the class of 2016 and beyond. The likelihood that there is still a player available that could contribute next season is almost nonexistent. The only scenario out there right now is probably a darkhorse international player but that is in the “massive longshot” category.

The first July live evaluation period is rapidly approaching and the Providence staff needs to be focused on players from the class of 2016 with an eye towards players in 2017. Some Big East compatriots have already gotten off to good starts in 2016 with Butler landing a pair of 4 star recruits in Joey Brunk and Howard Washington, Villanova picking up consensus top 20 recruit Omari Spellman and Xavier dipping into the New England Prep ranks to grab top 125 forward Tyrique Jones.

Carson Desrosiers Signs with Finnish Team Kataja Basket Club

Carson Desrosiers has signed a professional basketball contract and will be taking his talents (and hair stylings) to Finland. The 7-footer from New Hampshire will play for Kataja Basket Club in Joensuu, Finland. Kataja plays in the Korisliiga which is the best league in Finland and is comprised of the top 11 teams in the country. The league has been in existence for 75 years Kataja is the defending champion after defeating Bisons Loimaa 3-2 in the best of 5 series. That was the first Korisliiga title in the franchise’s history after being runner up in 2014 and finishing 3rd in 2013. Winning also qualifed them for the 2015-16 Eurocup regular season. Eurocup is one level below Euroleague which is considered the top tier European basketball league in the world.

Providence Recruiting Update: Recruiting Miss, Transfer News, New Offers and Interest

Providence has been actively pursuing big men since Paschal Chukwu announced he was transferring out of Friartown for a change of scenery. That news broke a little over 30 days ago. The Friar staff has done a lot in those 30-plus days, including adding veteran assistant Jeff Battle to replace the vacant spot left by Bob Simon’s departure to Alabama. They also added some beef to the frontcourt in 2015 big man Quadree Smith who committed to Ed Cooley and the Friars about 2 weeks ago. There was a recent miss in the class of 2015, news on the transfer wire, new offers being handed out and new interest being expressed.

Providence 2015 Frontcourt Target Commits to Boston College

After beefing up the frontcourt with the commitment of 6’8 250 pound Quadree Smith, Ed Cooley has missed out on adding length to that frontcourt as 2015 Sound Doctrine Christian Academy big man JC Reyes committed to Boston College on Thursday, per ESPN’s Jeff Borzello. Reyes visited Providence on June 11th and 12th after tripping to Boston College. He was also considering Penn State and South Florida. Cooley and the Friars still have an open scholarship for 2015 but the available options are increasingly more slim.

Providence Recruiting Update: Class of 2017 Phones Ringing

June 15th at 12:00am marks the first time that coaches can directly contact members of the class of 2017 — rising high school juniors. Ed Cooley is in Colorado Springs for the USA Basketball U19 training camp but he and his staff still managed to work the phones and reach out to a number of prospects. The Friars have a commitment in the class of 2017 already with Javon Taylor verbally pledging to Cooley at Providence’s elite camp in August of 2014. With Taylor on the books Providence currently has 2 open scholarships for the class of 2017 that number is likely to change with the transfer epidemic that is happening around college basketball.

Let’s take a look at some of the new and notable names that heard from the Friars on June 15th.
