Providence’s Kris Dunn Selected 5th Overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves

Dunn is heading to Minnesota after the Timberwolves selected him 5th overall. Dunn becomes the 42nd player from Providence to be selected in the NBA Draft and he joins the elite company of Otis Thorpe, Marvin Barnes, Ernie DiGregorio, Jimmy Walker and Lenny Wilkens as the only Providence players taken in the Top 10 of the NBA Draft. Dunn is also just the 3rd Providence player ever to be taken in the NBA Draft’s Lottery — a system that began in 1985 — joining Austin Croshere and Eric Williams.

Friends of Friars Basketball to Host 3rd Annual Charity Golf Outing

There is an organization that is made up largely of former Providence basketball players — Friends of Friars Basketball — that aims to raise money to benefit the Providence College basketball program. Their main concern though seems to be to continue to foster a togetherness and camaraderie among former players, coaches and supporters of the Providence basketball family. I attended their golf outing last year and it was a lot of fun. This year’s outing will take place on August 8th and the field is almost full. I spoke with President Chris Carter of FOFB about the upcoming event and their organization.

Providence Friars Fall Flat at Home Against St. John’s, 83-70

St. John’s entered their game at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center 0-3 in the Big East and last in 3-point shooting. Neither of those things were immediately evident as the Red Storm started the game on fire from downtown. Behind an 8/13 (61.5%) performance from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes St. John’s was able to force Ed Cooley’s team out of their zone defense and take a 42-30 lead into the locker room. Chris Obekpa only played 5 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble but it didn’t matter as Phil Greene IV 4/7 from deep and D’Angelo Harrison went 3/5 from 3-point range.
