Makai Ashton-Langford Chooses Providence This Time Around

Providence lost out on Makai Ashton-Langford the first go-round when the Worcester native committed to UConn and Kevin Ollie in September. This time Ed Cooley closed the deal and got a commitment from Ashton-Langford shortly after he was on campus for an official visit. Cooley built up a great relationship with both the player and the parents when chasing the Mass Rivals point guard the last several years and it appears that relationship was the key to Providence securing the services of the top-35 player. Ashton-Langford took an official visit starting April 7th after Cooley went up to Brewster Academy to meet with him on the first day coaches could be back on the road recruiting after the Final Four dead period.

Top 2018 Guard Includes Providence in Trimmed List of 8

Providence locked up their two commitments in the Class of 2017 earlier this month when both Dajour Dickens and Nate Watson signed their national letters of intent. As I’ve discussed, getting commitments on board in the current senior class by mid-September has allowed the Providence coaching staff to shift their recruiting focus towards the Classes of 2018 and 2019.

2017 Guard Schedules Official Visit with Providence

The search for size has dominated much of this recruiting cycle for Providence as they have tried to replace the transfer of Paschal Chukwu and the decision by Ben Bentil to stay in the 2016 NBA Draft. Ed Cooley grabbing a commitment from Canadian big man Kalif Young to finish off the Class of 2016 helped and Cooley also has Virginia 7-footer Dajour Dickens committed in the Class of 2017. Big men are certainly a focus, but Cooley has also kept a keen eye or two on Makai Ashton-Langford along the way. Cooley and his staff have attended plenty of Cushing Academy and Mass Rivals games over the last couple years and the lead guard has noticed. It isn’t news that Ashton-Langford has preferred three particular schools throughout this process but on Sunday his Mass Rivals coach, Vin Pastore, confirmed that all three of those schools will get official visits from him in September, as reported by Evan Daniels of Scout.com.

2016 Alpha Diallo Pledges to Providence

Ed Cooley had been on the hunt for talent to add to his roster for 2016-17 and beyond. On Tuesday, Cooley got a commitment from a top 100 wing player in Alpha Diallo. Diallo, a native of NYC, attended NEPSAC powerhouse Brewster Academy for his final year of high school. The news was first reported by Evan Daniels on Twitter. He will be the first Brewster Academy alumnus to commit to Providence directly from Brewster since Weyinmi Efejuku, another NYC native, donned a Friar uniform from 2005-2009. Former Friar Kyle Wright attended Brewster, but came to Providence via Monroe College. Diallo’s commitment also gives Cooley his first recruit ranked in ESPN’s Top 100 since he brought Paschal Chukwu and Jalen Lindsey to Providence in the recruiting class of 2014. Cooley has had at least one player ranked in ESPN’s Top 100 in every recruiting class at Providence except the first one in 2011 and the last one in 2015.

Ben Bentil Will Test NBA Draft Waters, Not Sign With Agent

In more not-so-surprising news, Providence sophomore Ben Bentil will put his hat in the ring for the 2016 NBA Draft, per a report from Evan Daniels of Scout.com. The move shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone after Bentil had a breakout sophomore campaign that garnered him First Team All-Big East honors and the league’s Most Improved Player Award. Bentil will not hire an agent, per the report. The report was confirmed by Bentil via his own Twitter account.
