Providence Recruiting Update: Rivals Updated Their Class of 2017 Top 150

Nearly three weeks after ESPN and Scout updated their rankings for the Class of 2017, Rivals has now done the same, bringing all three of the major recruiting services up to date, post-summer grassroots season. Rivals released the updated rankings on Tuesday. Unlike ESPN and Scout, Rivals ranks a Top 150 instead of just a Top 100. Providence’s lone commitment in the class didn’t make either Top 100, but Dajour Dickens is in Rivals’ Top 150. The Big East has a total of 6 commits inside the Top 100 as compared to 4 on ESPN’s and 5 on Scout’s Top 100’s. There are also 3 players committed to Big East schools in the 101-150 range of Rivals’ rankings.

Here’s where Providence’s commit and recruits fit on both lists, along with some notable Big East commits and former Providence targets:

Providence Recruiting Update: ESPN, Scout Release Updated Class of 2017 Top 100’s

With summer winding down and players heading back to their high schools and prep schools ESPN and Scout have released updated versions of the Top 100’s for the Class of 2017. The rising seniors on these lists are still mostly uncommitted with 36 and 38 of the 100 committed on ESPN’s and Scout’s lists, respectively. The Big East has 4 commits in ESPN’s Top 100 and 5 in Scout’s. The two services differ largely on where Providence’s top big man recruit ranks, but they are in relative agreement about the Friar’s top guard recruit. Here’s where Providence recruits fit on both lists, along with some notable Big East commits and former Providence targets:

Providence Recruits to Play in 2015 Big Strick Classic

The Big Strick Classic is a basketball-junkie’s dream that takes place each summer after the live periods of July have come and gone. Players from all across the country will travel to NYC to take on the best that NYC has to offer. The 2015 version of the tournament — named in honor of the late NYC streetball legend John “Big Strick” Strickland — is the 5th annual and features a number of Providence recruits, as well as many top national recruits in the classes of 2016, 2017 and a few from 2018.

Providence Recruits to Play on ESPNU Monday Night in adidas Nations Finale

The 2015 adidas Nations camp finishes up on Monday night with the final 2 games being played on ESPNU. The first game tips off at 7pm EDT with Team USA 2017 Lillard facing off against Team Africa. The second game tips off at 9pm EDT with Team USA 2016 Wall taking on Team USA 2016 Rose. There are a number of Friar recruits playing in each game. Wenyen Gabriel is averaging 18.0 points/game and 15.0 rebounds/game for Team Africa. The scoring mark is 8th-best while the rebounding numbers lead the camp by almost 5 boards per game. He is the only person at the 2015 adidas Nations camp to average a double-double. Each team has played 4 games heading into Monday night’s action.

Providence Recruiting Guide to the 3rd July 2015 Live Evaluation Period

The final live evaluation period of the summer is upon us and most of the attention turns to Las Vegas as many of Providence’s targets will be lacing it up in Sin City over the next few days. There is also a big AAU National tournament in Louisville taking place and some events happening in New Jersey. The Rivals — read: Wenyen Gabriel — are in Vegas at the adidas Uprising Championships so I would expect Ed Cooley will be all over them at that event.

Providence Recruiting Guide to the 2nd July 2015 Live Evaluation Period

With the 1st live period in the books and Nike and Adidas hosting their big league finals it’s time for Under Armour to take center stage on the shoe company grassroots circuit. The UA Association Finals this weekend in Atlanta will host a number of top Providence targets and you can be sure the Friar staff will be in attendance.

There are also some camps and other tournaments happening all across the country and many players are playing in more than 1 event during this 2nd live period. Ed Cooley shadowed Wenyen Gabriel and the Mass Rivals team during the 1st live period and there is no indication that will change. Jeff Battle will be down in his hometown of Winston-Salem for the CP3 Live event hosted by Phenom Hoops Report. Andre LaFleur is likely going to take in action in Maryland at the Ty Lawson/Victor Oladipo All-American Camp while hopping around to other events. I expect to see Brian Blaney in Brookville, NY for the Adidas Uprising All-American camp while doing some event-hopping himself.

Providence Recruiting Guide to the 1st July 2015 Live Evaluation Period

The July live evaluation periods are a critical time of year for recruits and college coaches. There are 3 sessions during the month for the players to impress and the coaches to evaluate and show interest. This first one is a big also because it will culminate the Nike EYBL season at the Peach Jam with the finals being held on July 12th at 3pm. ESPNU will televise the Nike EYBL Peach Jam finals again this year. They will have both semifinal games as well as the final game. This is a great chance for fans to see some of the top high school players in the nation and hopefully a Friar recruit or two will be involved in the action.

Under Armour also has action during this live period with their inaugural UA All-America Camp being held in Charlotte from July 7th through July 10th. They will have 80 of the best players from the UAA circuit in attendance.

Adidas is also hosting an event this live period with a similar event to the EYBL’s Peach Jam. The Adidas version is the finale of their Adidas Uprising Gauntlet circuit featuring the top 32 teams from that circuit this Spring. There are also a number of other camps and tournaments ongoing during this live period.
