How the Big East Made $20 Million in 17 Days

Win or lose, Villanova has already added over $8.5 million to the Big East’s coffers by making it to the title game of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Butler, Providence and Xavier have each brought more than $3.4 million back to the league by making it the Round of 32 and Seton Hall earned over $1.7 million just by being in the party for a day. This is the other side of winning in March that is so critical for the Big East. The 10 member schools that make up this configuration of the Big East conference have a lot in common as institutions, which is partly why they believe their marriage is made in heaven. Besides their love for basketball, the Big East member institutions don’t have the financial backing of their home state to help drive their athletic programs to championship heights.

Providence vs Villanova Injury Update: Bentil Day-to-Day, Ochefu Likely Out

Providence dropped their first road game of the season on Tuesday at DePaul and a big factor in that loss was Ben Bentil injuring his right ankle about halfway through the opening half. Bentil would return later in the first half before sitting with foul trouble and started the second half on the floor before being pulled by Ed Cooley. Bentil’s status for Saturday’s game is still up in the air, but Providence announced on Thursday that the native of Ghana is “day-to-day”. Cooley is expected to meet with the media later on Thursday, so more information may be known after that occurs.

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Shock Wildcats in Snowy Philadelphia

This Thoughts from the Road: Snowed in Philadelphia Edition is brought to you by Katie cooking great meals that included bacon and Ben coining the phrase “Deep Fryahs”. It’s fueled by the wings at McMenamin’s.

  • That was a hell of a Big East battle. The game started slow with the teams combining for a 2/10 shooting start and a 2-2 tie with 16:54 left in the first half. One thing that struck me while watching the teams answer each other and seesaw the lead back and forth over the course of 45 minutes of game action was that the refs didn’t seem to be involved. For me to not even notice Tony Chiazza until the second half is telling. Providence was only whistled for 4 team fouls and Villanova 6 in the first 20 minutes of the game. You read that correctly: neither team got into the bonus in the first half. That’s pretty amazing with the way referees are making themselves household names these days.
