Naadir Tharpe to Play in the D-League
Naadir Tharpe announced his intention to transfer from Kansas on May 1st. In the press release following his decision, Tharpe said “my daughter has current medical issues that require weekly visits to her physician, as well as with a specialist. At this juncture, I feel it is best to be closer to home where I can assist and support in any way.”
I don’t believe Providence was ever seriously in play as a landing spot for Tharpe. There were rumors that PC was concerned with the photo that was released of Tharpe and a topless 38 year old married woman right after the Jayhawks were bounced from the NCAA tournament. Another concern was rumored to be the fact that Tharpe was not guaranteed to be eligible immediately at his new school and that ruling would likely not come until he was enrolled at his new school for a month or more. With Ed Cooley and the Friars needing guard help for the 2014-15 season, it was likely too much of a risk to take a flyer on Tharpe.
Tharpe’s other local option was reportedly UMass. Joining Tharpe in the UMass backcourt next season would have been West Virginia transfer Jabarie Hinds (sat out last season per NCAA transfer rules) and returning players Trey Davis and Derrick Gordon. If Tharpe didn’t receive the waiver to play next season all 3 of those players can return plus Derrick Kellog has a pledge from 3 star 2015 point guard, Luwane Pipkins. So aside from the UMass backcourt being crowded, the scholarship situation in Amherst would have meant that Tharpe would have had to pay his own way at UMass.
Tharpe told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein that he intends to give it a go in the D-league.
Tharpe told Rothstein, “I didn’t want to sit out…At this point, I’d rather just try the D-League instead of sitting out a year to play a year [in college].”
Josh Fortune to Transfer to Colorado
CBSSports.com’s Jon Rothstein is reporting that Josh Fortune will transfer to Colorado, per Angela Fortune, Josh’s mother.
While the original reasoning for Fortune’s transfer was to be closer to home, Colorado is in fact further away in miles from his home in Hampton, VA. Per Google Maps, Hampton, VA is 548 miles from Providence. It’s a roughly 3 hour flight and about a 9 hour drive. Now let’s look at those same stats, again via Google Maps, for Hampton, VA to Boulder, CO. The distance from Hampton to Boulder is 1,764 miles. A flight is roughly 4 hours. Driving time is 24 hours. Let that sink in for a minute.
Following the “closer to home” reasoning provided, Mrs. Fortune told Inside the Peninsula District‘s Dave Johnson “it was for professional reasons. He believes it’s in his best interest to transfer to find, in his words, ‘an environment conducive to my academic, athletic and social growth.'”
Any less confused?
In the end, Fortune leaves a school where he a school where he played in 69 games, 1,941 minutes (an average of 28.1 mpg) in his career. He would have likely been the unquestioned starting shooting guard a year after being named the team’s Most Improved Player at the end of the year banquet a month before announcing his transfer. Fortune’s competition at Colorado will likely include Jaron Hopkins, George King, Eli Stalzer, Xavier Talton, Dustin Thomas and anyone the Buffs coaching staff brings in during the 2015 recruiting class.
Fortune visited Minnesota and LSU in addition to Colorado which was his first visit during the transfer process. According to Rothstein, Fortune chose Colorado over LSU and Valparaiso. Fortune will have to sit out the 2014-15 season per NCAA transfer rules and have 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Providence Non-Conference Schedule Update
On Sunday night, the Providence Journal’s Kevin McNamara reported that Ed Cooley is “putting the finishing touches on a schedule “that may be too hard” and features home games against Rhode Island and Massachusetts, a trip to preseason No. 1-ranked Kentucky, a return to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for a game against Miami, and games against Florida State and Notre Dame in the Hall of Fame Tip-off at Mohegan Sun casino.”
This morning Jon Rothstein tweeted that the Miami game will be part of a doubleheader with Manhattan vs. Fordham and will be played on 12/22/14. This confirms a previous report from John Rooke who hinted at this last week.
Let’s take a look at what we know so far:

Niagara Graduate Transfer Antoine Mason to Visit PC per Jon Rothstein
Jon Rothstein tweeted late last week that Niagara transfer Antoine Mason had cut his list down to 3 schools: Auburn, Boston College and Providence.
That report was refuted by both Antoine and his father, Anthony.
Well it appears Rothstein didn’t just make this source up out of thin air as he is now reporting that Antoine Mason has scheduled 3 visits: Auburn on June 6-7, Providence June 8-9 and Boston College will get the final visit with no date set yet.
The reasons for the Masons refuting of the initial report last week is unclear but perhaps they wanted to hold the door open for other schools to make their final pitch before announcing the visits. Whatever the reason, someone obviously let the cat out of the bag last week to Rothstein and he looks vindicated after not backing down from the initial report.
The timing of this visit is critical for Providence as head coach Ed Cooley plans to get on a plane for Colorado Springs, CO to begin his stint with USA Basketball on June 9th.
I’ll be breaking down the pro’s and con’s of these 3 schools from Mason’s perspective in an article for ScoutFriars later this week.
UPDATE 12:05pm: Jeff Borzello wrote the following about an hour ago:
“I think the official is Auburn and the others [are] unofficial,” Mason told CBSSports.com in a text message.
With so many schools showing interest, Mason could take a few more trips.
“I have more, just haven’t set them up,” he said. “I’m still narrowing the list.”
There is no set timetable for a decision.
