Thoughts from the Road: There Can Be Only One; Friars Defeat NJIT

This Thoughts from the Road: Couch Version is brought to you by Fox Sports 1 and was fueled by Lizzie’s leftover stromboli.

  • Kris Dunn continues to gorge stat sheets every time he steps on the court. There was a very real possibility of Dunn notching his second career triple-double in Providence’s win over NJIT. In fact, if not for a handcheck foul called on an NJIT defender while Dunn was mid-alley oop pass he would have gotten that 10th assist. Dunn also crept up on a quadruple-double with his 7 steals — 1 off his career high. There has never been a quadruple-double recorded in a game pitting two Division I teams against each other. Dunn had to settle for a measly double-double — the second of the season and 10th of his career. Dunn was all over the court on the defensive end.

Thoughts from the Road: 2015-16 Friars Make Dunk Debut Against D2 Stonehill

The “Thoughts from the Road” posts will be back this season and I’m looking forward to getting to write one of these following an actual Providence basketball game that counts. But for now I’ll give you my thoughts from the road after an exhibition matchup against Division II Stonehill that was played at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on October 31st….

2016 Big Man Dylan Painter Cuts List to 7, Providence Out

While one member of Team Final — Tony Carr — that had Providence in his final 5 schools committed elsewhere on Monday afternoon, Dylan Painter cut his list to a final 7 and did not include the Friars. The 6’10 big man from Hershey, PA cut his list down on Monday night to 7 and Providence made the cut, along with George Washington, NC State, Penn State, St. Joseph’s, URI, Villanova and Xavier. Painter was officially offered by the Friars on July 10th during the 1st live evaluation period of the month. His most recent offer could be a tough team to beat in Villanova. The Wildcats offered Painter earlier on Monday.

Providence Survives Late Turnovers to Beat Xavier in OT, 69-66

Providence led this game for 36:05 of the 45:00 it would take to get an outcome in this Big East battle that required a timeout at one point to clean blood off the court at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in front of 8,250 fans. Providence led by double digits for a fair amount of that 36 minutes of lead time yet the game never felt in control. With Providence leading, 45-35, I asked on Twitter: “anyone else feel like this 10 point lead is really 1?”

That was around the 9:43 mark of the second half. The lead fluctuated between 10 and 6 for awhile after that until a 10 point lead at the 3:12 mark following 2 made free throws by Kris Dunn would evaporate down to 0 when the clock ran out of regulation time. 3 consecutive turnovers, each one more lackadaisical than the last, gave Xavier the ability to come all the way back to force the overtime session.

Cooley Uses Unconventional 2nd Half Lineup to Come Back for Friars’ Road Win at Butler

The first 20 minutes at Hinkle Fieldhouse saw a Providence team that was playing the same way they had on the road all season. The story early was turnovers of which the Friars had 6 in the first 9 minutes. Just as they seemed to quiet that issue that other ugly problem that has plagued them on the road came to the forefront: giving up offensive rebounds. Butler led by 7 at the half and Cooley and the Friars were left searching for answers.
