Game Notes

  • PC is 4-12 all time against Marquette and has lost 10 of their 11 matchups as members of the Big East
  • Marquette has now played in 3 straight OT games after not playing any extra basketball in their first 17 games. They are 1-2 in those 3 contests
  • Todd Mayo has been stepping up his scoring of late and he’s been doing it in clutch situations. Of the 28 points he has scored in Marquette’s last 3 games, 17 have come in the final minute of regulation or overtime
  • Providence is looking for their 6th straight conference win for the first time since the 2003-2004 season. 6 is also the current record for longest Big East win streak in PC history
  • Line opened at PC +5.5

Game Preview

Based on my numbers this game should be a pick ’em but my numbers don’t take into account home court advantage, etc. The line has since moved down a bit to 4.5 or 5 depending on where you look but about 2/3 of the money is coming in on the Friars from what I’ve seen.

It’s been well documented and discussed during the 4 day layoff between games that PC has struggled against Marquette over the years, especially in Milwaukee. The Friars last win against Marquette came in January 2007 at the Dunk. PC hasn’t won at Marquette – ever. This is a Friar team that is focused and playing their game right now though. Marquette is a team that has been very up and down all year and has gotten inconsistent production from just about everyone on their roster. Some of their fans see this season as a lost year and think Buzz Williams should be focusing on the future already.

PC has only played 4 road games this year and has split the contest 2-2. The Friar’s biggest issue on the road has been their shooting. Granted their shooting hasn’t been all that spectacular at the Dunk either but they cannot afford to get into an early hole a la @ Villanova. They enter tonight’s game with an eFG% of 46.9 which is good for 282nd in the nation according to Kenpom. Not surprisingly, PC’s offense has had better efficiency numbers in their road wins than their road losses but a lot of the other stats don’t really present any patterns. Maybe that’s because of the small sample size or maybe it’s because this team hadn’t established their identity until recently.

The key to the game will be for Providence to play their game (duh). Cotton and Batts should continue to work the pick and roll and they should be getting into the lane and looking to score in the paint or get fouled (or both, preferably). Fortune will have to shut down Todd Mayo who has played pretty well at home this season. I think the X factor for tonight’s game will be Tyler Harris. He can provide another scoring threat for PC who may need that “other” person to step up and help out Cotton and Henton/Batts if those guys get off to a slow start and he may present some matchup problems/force Marquette to adjust their lineups. I think Henton will continue his strong rebounding numbers from Saturday when he registered his 22nd career double double (only 2nd of this season). This will likely be a grind it out game (Marquette is ranked as the best scoring defense in the Big East at 65.5 ppg) that is won on the glass and at the free throw line. That favors Providence.

Prediction: Providence 62 Marquette 60

Game Recap: PC vs. Xavier 1/25/14

As I discussed in the keys to the game, Desrosiers would have to come up big today to help Batts out inside and CD really did make his presence known with 7 rebounds and 5 blocks. I believe he was a big key in keeping Semaj Christon out of the lane for much of the day. The other big game today was from LaDontae Henton who finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds despite fouling out with a few minutes left in the game. Bryce Cotton was Bryce Cotton scoring 25 points and dishing 7 assists. I agree with Coach Cooley – “if you tell me a guy in the last month that has played better than him (Cotton) in the country, in the country, I want to know who that is.” I also thought Fortune had some key buckets throughout the game including the 3 and 1 he hit and the slick footwork and adept left handed baby hook to score in the lane. These last 5 games have been nothing short of fun. Some have been more fun during the game (Georgetown and Creighton) than others (SJU, Butler, Xavier) but the results have been fantastic. Now the real tests will come as PC heads out onto the road in 4 of their next 5 contests. The Friars will travel to Milwaukee to take on Marquette on Thursday and then head to Chicago to take on DePaul next Saturday.

Rapid Reaction: Friars Keep Rolling #pcbb

Despite not shooting very well in the first half PC managed to take a 35-31 lead into the break. Ladontae Henton had a huge day finishing with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Carson Desrosiers played really well down low including 5 blocks. And of course Bryce Cotton was Bryce Cotton with 25 points and 7 assists.

Final Score: PC 81 Xavier 72

Game Preview: PC vs. Xavier 1/25/14

Where: Dunkin’ Donuts Center – Providence, RI

When: 12:00pm

Game Notes

  • PC has extended their Big East winning streak to 4 with their grind it out win over Butler at the Dunk on a blizzardy Tuesday night. This would be a huge win for the Friars to take with them on the road next week as they head to Milwaukee and then Chicago to take on Marquette and DePaul.
  • This will mark the third game in a row that PC will take on a new member of the Big East.
  • Kadeem Batts has been playing very well of late. Even when his shot isn’t falling early, he has shown the ability to get to the free throw line and is an impressive 29/35 (83%) over his last 4 games. He has also been a beast on the glass, averaging 9.5 rpg over that span, including a career best 17 rebound performance against Butler on Tuesday. Batts is playing much more aggressive than earlier in the year which is good to see but it has also led to some foul trouble of late.
  • 8 of PC’s 19 games have been decided by 4 points or less this season. They are 5-3 in those games including a 2-2 record in the 4 games of the 8 that have gone into overtime.
  • Cotton has scored 20 or more points in 35% of all games he has played at PC. He also currently leads the Big East in assists.
  • Line opened at pick ’em in Vegas.

Keys to the Game

  • Batts staying aggressive and taking it to Stainbrook early and often. PC makes their money with offensive rebounds and free throw shooting. Batts will be a key cog in both.
  • Contain Semaj Christon. He is averaging 24 ppg over his last 5 games and is Xavier’s best player.
  • Get meaningful minutes from Carson Desrosiers. His interior presence protecting the rim will be a big factor in keeping Christon out of the lane and Stainbrook off the glass.

Prediction: Xavier 69 Providence 71 (OT)
