Thoughts from the Road: Friars Ice Cold at Home, Fall to Xavier

This Thoughts from the Road is brought to you by the energy inside the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and is fueled by Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee…a lot of it.

  • The Dunkin’ Donuts Center was absolutely rocking. The fans piled in early and were raring to go — no doubt after having a few pregame beverages — well before the opening tip. This was the loudest I have ever heard the Dunk. A particular shoutout to the lady sitting over my left shoulder who made Craig Leighton and I a little more deaf than when we entered the arena. Ed Cooley has been longing for a crowd like that and it was clear after the game that it hurt him to disappoint the 12,804 fans in the building.

Thoughts from the Road: Friars Shock Wildcats in Snowy Philadelphia

This Thoughts from the Road: Snowed in Philadelphia Edition is brought to you by Katie cooking great meals that included bacon and Ben coining the phrase “Deep Fryahs”. It’s fueled by the wings at McMenamin’s.

  • That was a hell of a Big East battle. The game started slow with the teams combining for a 2/10 shooting start and a 2-2 tie with 16:54 left in the first half. One thing that struck me while watching the teams answer each other and seesaw the lead back and forth over the course of 45 minutes of game action was that the refs didn’t seem to be involved. For me to not even notice Tony Chiazza until the second half is telling. Providence was only whistled for 4 team fouls and Villanova 6 in the first 20 minutes of the game. You read that correctly: neither team got into the bonus in the first half. That’s pretty amazing with the way referees are making themselves household names these days.
