Kris Dunn Named to 2016 Bob Cousy Award Watch List

The preseason honors and attention hasn’t slowed down for Providence’s Kris Dunn. After being named the #1 player in college basketball in 2015-16 by CBS Sports on Monday, Dunn was named to the preseason watch list for the 2016 Bob Cousy Award — given to top point guard in college basketball each season. Dunn joins 19 other players on the preseason watch list. He was also on the in-season watch list last season announced on February 20th, along with 16 other players. Utah’s Delon Wright won the award in 2015. No Providence player has ever won the award that was established in 2003 with Jameer Nelson of St. Joseph’s winning the inaugural award.

Who Is The Next Providence Recruit to Blow Up On The National Stage?

Kris Dunn. Abdul-Malik Abu. Donovan Mitchell. Wenyen Gabriel. What do these players all have in common? They were recruited by Providence head coach Ed Cooley before they blew up on the national recruiting scene. Dunn was being recruited by Cooley while the current Friar head coach was at Fairfield. He went from being a recruit on that level to a McDonald’s All-American. Gabriel is probably the closest to Dunn in terms of meteoric rise. Cooley and his staff have shown an uncanny ability to be able to identify these players before they start their upward trajectory as recruits. Who’s the next recruit that Providence is in early on that will blow up nationally? My guess is Aaron Wheeler in the class of 2017.

On Monday CBS Sports announced their preseason All-American squads and Dunn found himself on the First Team again. Dunn joins Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield, LSU’s Ben Simmons, Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer and Kentucky’s Skal Labissiere on the First Team.

Why Sedee Keita is the Key to Providence’s 2016 Recruiting Class

Sedee Keita is the key to Providence’s 2016 recruiting class. No offense to committed point guard Maliek White but that previous statement is a fact. White was a big-time get for Ed Cooley and his staff because they were looking to replace Kris Dunn — the former McDonald’s All-American is expected to jump to the NBA after his redshirt junior season in 2015-16. Had Cooley and his staff not landed White they would still be chasing other guards but if they didn’t find one they wanted in 2016 it wouldn’t have been a massive blow. The current roster has two or three players who are capable of handling point guard duties for stretches, including sophomore Kyron Cartwright who started some games alongside Dunn a season ago and could very well do the same this season. The class of 2017 — especially in New England — is loaded with talented guards and the Friar coaching staff is already heavily involved with a number of them.
