Providence’s Henton Named to Lute Olson Award Mid-Season Watch List

LaDontae Henton has been a player that has flown under the national radar much like his teammate Bryce Cotton did a season ago while leading Providence in scoring. Henton was recently left off the midseason watch list for the Wooden Award which was ranked as the #2 snub by Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Eisenberg. He was also only named to the 2nd Team of the Preseason All-Big East team which is something Ed Cooley has called “a joke” on more than one occasion. On Wednesday Henton got some recognition however by being named to the Lute Olson Award Mid-Season Watch List.

Providence Friars Fall Flat at Home Against St. John’s, 83-70

St. John’s entered their game at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center 0-3 in the Big East and last in 3-point shooting. Behind an 8/13 (61.5%) performance from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes St. John’s was able to force Ed Cooley’s team out of their zone defense and take a 42-30 lead into the locker room. Chris Obekpa only played 5 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble but it didn’t matter as Phil Greene IV 4/7 from deep and D’Angelo Harrison went 3/5 from 3-point range.

Providence Friars Need Overtime to Beat Georgetown, 60-57, in Classic Big East Slugfest

“That was an old-school Big East war.”

Ed Cooley said that during his opening statement of the postgame press conference. It certainly had an old-school feel. The first half was a rock fight with both teams shooting under 30% from the field. Providence led by as much as 6 in the opening stanza but Georgetown was able to overcome that deficit to take a 2 point lead into the locker room, 23-21.
