The 2016 National Prep Championships are being held Tuesday and Wednesday at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT and there are a good amount of Providence recruiting targets that are playing over the next two days. Adam Finkelstein already spotted Providence coaches at Albertus Magnus College and it was later learned that those coaches are Ed Cooley and Andre LaFleur. The question is, who is Providence there to see? Here are some answers.
Recruiting never stops and Providence continues to scowl the landscape for a big man to add to the class of 2016 that currently only includes point guard Maliek White. There are certainly some names that have become well-known to Providence fans over the last few months like Darius Hicks, Levi Cook, Isaiah Whaley and others. But some new ones also surfaced recently. A Friar coach was also spotted at a NEPSAC game on Wednesday. Shifting gears to future classes, ESPN released their updated player rankings for the classes of 2017 and 2018 and there are some notable Friar recruits scattered among the lists. The Friars also extended an offer to a player in the class of 2018 over the weekend after various Friar coaches attended the talent-heavy Hoophall Classic that took place at Springfield College from January 14th-18th.
The annual National Prep Showcase will be in New Haven, CT this weekend beginning with a 10:30am tip between Notre Dame Prep and Fork Union Military Academy. The Providence staff will take the trip down 95 South — watch out for night construction! — to attend the event hosted by the New England Recruiting Report. Of particular interest to Ed Cooley and his staff is a big man from a different military academy.
The early signing period for college basketball begins on Wednesday, November 11th and lasts until November 18th. Players have that 7 day window to lock in their pledges and bind their commitments to their schools. Providence currently has 1 player committed in the class of 2016: Maliek White. He is going to sign his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday with dual ceremonies happening at his school — George Wythe — and the facility of his grassroots team — River City Reign. There should be some photos and quotes from that out tomorrow.
Episode 2 of the pcbb1917.com Friartown Fan Voice podcast is live. In this episode I touch on some of the remaining 2016 big man names on the recruiting front, go over the results of the Big East Media Day awards and preseason coaches’ poll, touch on the upcoming season and finish with some questions from you, the fans.
This should be available in iTunes so keep an eye out for that so you can subscribe and be automatically notified when a new episode is uploaded. I’m planning on doing one more preseason podcast the week right before the first game against Harvard and will give an in-depth preview of the non-conference schedule.
