Two years ago I wrote an article titled “Why Providence’s Late Night Madness is Important.”I typed up that article after attending the 2014 event in Mullaney Gym that featured Jalen Rose as emcee and a performance by Big Sean. While some of my readers may not know who Big Sean is, the students and recruits who attended the event that year certainly did. Late Night Madness has been happening at Providence since Rick Pitino brought it to Friartown in 1985. The event had become quite stale in recent years with local artists who were not well-known by most people — let alone the students or recruits — being the main non-basketball entertainment, alongside the dance routines of various campus clubs and organizations. For lack of a better term, Late Night Madness at Providence had become small-time.
Brisk mid-October temperatures are heading for the Northeast this weekend but the temperature inside Alumni Hall on Providence College’s campus figures to be red-hot. Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Napolillo and Ed Cooley have managed to keep the bar high for Providence’s Late Night Madness festivities that will kick off at 8pm on Saturday with the introduction of the men’s and women’s basketball teams by broadcasting legend Bill Raftery. Doors open at 6pm for those students with season tickets and all other students can enter at 6:45pm. The event is open only to Providence College students. Ludacris will perform around 9pm. Cox Hub will have free live streaming of Late Night Madness from 8pm-9pm.
Providence’s Late Night Madness events keep growing year after year under Ed Cooley and the 2015 version is no different. After announcing that Ludacris would be the performer back on September 1st, Providence athletics released a statement on Thursday that the emcee of the 2015 festivities will be none other than broadcasting legend Bill Raftery.
I created an Instagram account for the site where I will post pictures taken at games, press conferences and other relevant events. Give me a follow by clicking here.
Providence recruit JJ Matthews announced via his Twitter account that he will undergo surgery in two weeks for a torn meniscus and ACL damage. Matthews is scheduled to visit Providence during the first week of October.
After a week’s worth of teasers from the Providence Athletics Twitter and Snapchat accounts the announcement has finally been made about who will be performing at the 2015 Late Night Madness festivities in Friartown: Ludacris. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, October 17th. Doors open at 6:30pm and the event is open to Providence College students only.
