Cooley: Redshirting Drew Edwards “definitely a possibility”

For those Friar fans wondering where Drew Edwards has been lately — he sat out Providence’s final non-conference game against Boston College last week — Ed Cooley may have hinted at a potential answer: Edwards might get shut down to redshirt. The possibility was raised during the Big East coaches media teleconference on Tuesday morning. Cooley mentioned that Edwards has struggled to get back up to speed following his offseason knee surgery.

Chin Up, Friar Fans. Big East Play is Looming

Friar fans, you need to fight that feeling. No, not the one REO Speedwagon sings about. I’m talking about that pit in your stomach that’s been there since around 6pm on December 23rd. Despite a rather unceremonious ending to the non-conference part of their schedule, the Providence Friars had a good start to the season. 10-3. That’s better than the 9-4 I predicted and they certainly are further along at this point than I anticipated, losing to the lowly Boston College Eagles notwithstanding. In a year that was supposed to be all about development of young talent to bring them along for future years this has been a fun group to watch and some of those green players appear ready to help right now, notably Kalif Young.

Thoughts from the Road: Rodney Bullock Closes November on High Note

This Thoughts from the Road: Couch Edition is brought to you by half a buffalo burrito from Gonzo’s and some leftover apple cider.

  • Congrats to Ed Cooley on his 200th career win as a head coach. Cooley’s overall record in 11 seasons in 200-138, good for a .592 W-L mark. His record as the head coach at Providence is now 108-69 seven games into his sixth season in Friartown.
  • Rodney Bullock went off. Not only did he finish with a career-high 36 points on Wednesday night, but Bullock scored 19 of them in this first half. There was a different level of confidence possessed by Bullock in this game and if he can harness that swagger he might just be the go-to player Providence has been hoping for in the post-Dunn era. Aside from the blistering 5/8 from 3-point range, the other impressive offensive stat from Bullock’s box score was his 11 free throw attempts. He made 7 of those for a 63.6% make rate — which needs to be better — but getting to the line 11 times shows his aggressiveness on offense. He needs to keep that level of assertive play up as the games get tougher in Big East play in less than a month.
