Providence Recruiting Guide to the 1st April 2015 Live Evaluation Period

This will be the first of two live evaluation periods in the month of April. A live evaluation period means college coaches are allowed to attend and evaluate recruits. This will be the first time coaches can see players in their grassroots setting since July 2014. As I did last spring and summer I’ll be providing a guide for fans to follow along and see where Providence’s targets are playing during a given live evaluation period. I’ll also be doing my best to keep up with the map that tracks where Ed Cooley and his staff are during each live period and any recruiting period in between. This post will be updated as the weekend goes on and more information is known. Continue reading Providence Recruiting Guide to the 1st April 2015 Live Evaluation Period

Providence Recruiting Guide to the 2015 National Prep School Invitational

While the Providence coaching staff probably won’t be able to attend much of this weekend’s National Prep School Invitational due to a road game at Xavier on Saturday there will be a number of Providence recruiting targets playing at Rhode Island College this weekend.

The NPSI begins on Thursday, February 5th and runs through Sunday, February 8th. There are teams from all over New England as well as teams from Florida, Kansas, South Carolina, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and even some international teams from Canada and the Czech Republic. Cox Hub will have live streaming available of 3 games each day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The cost is $5/day or $9 for a month pass to get all NPSI streaming games.

Below is the full schedule of the event. All games will be played at Rhode Island College on Mount Pleasant Avenue in Providence. You’ll see that I’ve listed any Providence recruits that are playing in a particular game.

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 9/26/14

After last weekend’s flurry of visitors Ed Cooley and his staff didn’t sit at home and rest on their laurels. Cooley and his staff were spotted all over the country this past week checking in on future prospects in 2016 and 2017 but also making a point to be seen by primary 2015 target Justin Robinson. To see where the staff was this week, check out the site feature called “Where is Ed Cooley and the staff?” which is linked at the top of the page on the menu bar.

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 8/22/14

There wasn’t a ton of recruiting news this past week as the Friars were in the midst of their Italy trip. I would expect to start hearing more next week when the staff is back in the States. Visits will likely begin to be set up and the picture at the guard positions on the recruiting trail in the class of 2015 should get a little more clear.

As for some of what did occur this past week:

The July live evaluation periods have come and gone and a lot of recruits have cut their lists down to more manageable figures. Some recruits have even already given commitments. Providence obviously got some good news last weekend after their Elite Camp on Saturday with two verbal commitments. The first was from a member of the class of 2017 (rising sophomores) in Javon Taylor. Taylor seems to have a good basketball pedigree and isn’t done growing.

The second commitment came from a member of the class of 2015. Alex Owens gave Ed Cooley his pledge after newly minted associate head coach Bob Simon worked tirelessly as the lead recruiter with Owens. Adding Owens to Ryan Fazekas has vaulted the national class ranking for the Friars to 19th according to the 247Sports Composite Team Ranking. CoxHub had the guys at New England Recruiting Report give a writeup on Alex Owens. It’s an interesting read. Owens is playing for USA South in the Nike Global Challenge in Chicago. His team won their first game against Pan Africa in overtime on Thursday but fell in game two against China Friday morning. Game three is Friday night at 9pm against USA East.

Providence College Elite Camp Attendees

Last year’s Elite Camp was very memorable because there was a lot of talk about a PC ‘Fab 5’ with Abu, Chukwu, Lindsey, Joseph and Terrell. PC coordinator of basketball ops Mike Jackson even set up a phone call for Abu, Chukwu, Joseph, Terrell and 2015 Donovan Mitchell (Lindsey was not at the Elite Camp) with former Michigan Fab Five member, Chris Webber. All of the stops were being pulled out.

Chukwu and Lindsey obviously wound up at PC (and Lindsey was already committed prior to the Elite Camp last summer) but Abu chose NC State, Joseph chose Syracuse and Terrell chose Oklahoma State then URI. Donovan Mitchell wasn’t planning on attending this year’s camp anyway due to a family reunion but I would think Thursday night’s commitment to Louisville solidifies his absence.

Here are the players that I have confirmed will be at this year’s Elite Camp by class and last name (I’ll update this if more names are confirmed):

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 7/3/14

With Friday being the 4th of July I am releasing the weekly recruiting update a day earlier than normal. This weekly update will return to it’s normally scheduled Friday next week. This will be the final recruiting update prior to the first July live period which begins at 5pm on July 9th. For more information on the recruiting calendar over the next few weeks, check out this page.

News came down Wednesday afternoon that Josh Fortune was transferring to Colorado. This ends one of the more bizarre and confusing player transfers I’ve ever seen and I doubt the real reasons will ever be truly made public. Whatever the reasons, it seems Fortune was looking for a fresh start and he will get that at Colorado which is much further from his home than Providence, for what that’s worth.

Fortune leaving has left a bit of a hole at the shooting guard position. After the various swings and misses this spring, Ed Cooley and his staff are apparently on the fence about bringing someone in at this late stage. I’m told that Armel Potter is anxious to have the PC coaches watch him play live which is something that hasn’t happened as of yet. Potter is mulling over possibly playing somewhere during the July live periods but no decision has been made on that. I was told that Potter hasn’t spoken with Cooley yet but I get the sense that if Cooley calls with an offer, Potter will be on the next plane to Friartown. The former Florida Atlantic commit has offers from Appalachian State, Ball State, Iona, Niagara, Tennessee Tech and some other mid majors.
