Drew Edwards: Family, Loyalty and a Competitive Spirit

Drew Edwards didn’t average 30 points/game in high school. He didn’t leave the Baltimore area to attend a basketball-factory prep school. He didn’t run on the Nike EYBL, adidas Gauntlet or Under Armour Association circuits. He went to the same all-boys Catholic high school that his father, uncle and brother attended. He played with a non-shoe company affiliated AAU program coached by the same people who coached him in youth leagues growing up. He is loyal. He is competitive. He plays to win.

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 9/19/14

After the last couple of weeks being pretty quiet after the commitment of 2015 guard Drew Edwards this upcoming weekend is a big one in Friartown. Not only will Edwards be taking his official visit to Providence this weekend but he will be joined by the first player to commit to Ed Cooley in the class of 2015, Ryan Fazekas. But the most important visitor this weekend and a player that Edwards and Fazekas will try to help recruit is 2015 point guard recruit Justin Robinson. This will be Robinson’s 3rd official visit with the first two being at local schools Virginia Tech and Maryland. Robinson plans to take his other two visits after this weekend in Providence but Ed Cooley and the Friar Faithful are hoping that Robinson will give Cooley a commitment before returning home on Sunday.

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 9/12/14

The last week has been pretty quiet on the Providence recruiting front. We haven’t heard about any other players scheduling visits to PC but there have been some Friar recruits who have given their pledges elsewhere. None are earth shattering and some didn’t ever get an official offer from Ed Cooley but commitments are happening fast and furious all over college basketball. Providence currently has 2 open scholarships for the 2015 class with an eye on point guard Justin Robinson to fill one and possibly bank the other to save for a transfer or Spring addition.

Robinson is on his second of five scheduled official visits this weekend. His first visit during Labor Day weekend was to Buzz Williams and Virginia Tech while visit two is taking place at Maryland. Visits 3 through 5 are scheduled thus: Providence 9/19-9/21, Creighton 9/27-9/28 and UNLV 10/3-10/4. I think some people are discounting UNLV and Creighton because Robinson has played his recruitment fairly close to the vest.

#pcbb Weekly Recruiting Update 9/5/14

Labor Day weekend figured to be quiet with students moving into their dorms on the PC campus but some unexpected news hit that Friday with the apparent addition of German guard Tyree Chambers to the roster for the 2014-15 season.

Chambers visited Providence back in May and an offer was extended about 3 weeks ago. The connection appears to have been fostered by Associate Head Coach Andre LaFleur which is similar to the Kyron Cartwright recruitment. Chambers is at Providence and enrolled in classes but has not yet been given the go ahead by the NCAA Clearinghouse though he told Jeff Ferrucci of ScoutFriars.com “the clearance shouldn’t be a problem because I never signed a contract. I was just a youth player traveling with the team.” There is a highlight video (below) that shows highlights of Chambers playing in the NBBL which he describes as “the highest level for basketball under the age of 19.”

2015 Guard Drew Edwards Commits to Providence

2015 guard Drew Edwards has committed to Providence, per Edgar Walker. This kind of caught me by surprise as I heard earlier in the week that Edwards was in the process of scheduling visits in September. Having said that, my gut was that Edwards and another DMV guard, Justin Robinson, were the top two guard targets left on Ed Cooley’s big board. Edwards was also considering Clemson, Dayton, Kansas State, Providence, Richmond and USC.

Drew Edwards is a talented scorer who stayed loyal to his AAU team Maryland 3D. Instead of jumping to a Nike, Adidas or Under Armour team, Edwards stuck with the unaffiliated program and the coaches he had been coaches by since the 4th grade. Edwards will play the shooting guard spot in college but has the ability to handle the ball if necessary as he ran point guard during his AAU season. He will likely not come into Providence and play 30+ minutes per game next season but once he gets his feet wet he will be a nice weapon for Ed Cooley and the Friars.
