2016 Forward Wenyen Gabriel to Visit Providence October 9th

Wenyen Gabriel has sort of gotten lost in the shuffle of Providence recruiting talk over the last couple of weeks. Gabriel blew up this summer and received offers from some of the most blue blood programs in college basketball. He cut his list to a final 5 and included Providence but the Friars were the last of his 5 to have an official visit date set so Friar fans were not feeling optimistic, having been spurned by their top target before in previous recruiting years. Gabriel did set a visit date for an official visit to Providence on Wednesday and Friartown is abuzz with talk of what this means for their chances of landing the top 20 recruit.

Providence Recruiting Update: In-Home Visits & Visits to Friartown

I hope everyone had a lovely Labor Day Weekend and people are ready for the fall to begin. Something that will begin this week is a recruiting period. That means — starting on September 9th — coaches can visit players at their homes and schools. That hasn’t been able to occur since April 22nd. The Providence coaching staff will be very busy on September 9th as they have plans to visit a lot of recruits, either at their homes or at their schools. There are also two more Friar targets that will get attention on and off campus from the Providence coaching staff. More on all of that below.

2016 Wenyen Gabriel Cuts List to 5

Wenyen Gabriel may have been the largest stock-riser in the class of 2016 this grassroots season. The 6’9 combo forward possesses an offer list that reads like a who’s who of college basketball elite. Then there is Providence and Ed Cooley. Cooley has been on Gabriel the longest of any high major school. Providence became Gabriel’s first high major offer back in July 2014. Gabriel’s only other offer at that time was from in-state New Hampshire. On Wednesday Gabriel cut his list down to a final 5 schools. That list is comprised of Duke, Kentucky, Maryland, Providence and UConn, according to a tweet from Adam Finkelstein.

Providence Recruiting Update: Providence Hosts Elite Camp, Makes Pair of List Cuts

Providence hosted their annual Elite Camp on August 8th on the school’s campus and this was the first year I attended. A while back when I decided that I would keep that Saturday open so I could attend the camp this year I had ideas in my head of seeing some of Providence’s star recruits in person. That didn’t exactly come to fruition as there were other competing events — namely the Big Strick Classic in NYC — that thinned out the field for the 2015 version of camp. Still, there was a lot to see and some new names that popped up onto my radar. Other recent recruiting news is that the Friars made the top 5 for JJ Matthews and the top 6 for Quentin Jackson. Both players cut down their lists on Monday. More on Elite Camp and these two recruits below.

Providence Recruiting Update: July Recap, Stock Risers & Wenyen Gabriel

The three live evaluation periods of July are now in the books and the Providence coaching staff logged some heavy frequent flier miles tracking their coveted recruits. Ed Cooley spent much of his time sitting front and center at all Mass Rivals games. Rivals features a number of Providence targets but the grand prize in 2016 is Wenyen Gabriel. Gabriel got the Donovan Mitchell treatment in July. More on that later. Some other Friar prospects took some major steps forward and the influence of newly-hired assistant coach Jeff Battle is becoming more clear as new names are added to Providence’s stable of targets.
